My dad told me something recently that was interesting and it completely changed how I also see formal education.
He said, "When he was much younger, things were very different. When university graduates finished NYSC back then, they didn't have to search for jobs. Jobs were waiting for them. Some companies even gave them cars. Some gave them housing. You just graduate and your life was literally set."
I sat there thinking wow, that’s definitely not our reality at all.
Today, we have seen graduates with first-class honors go jobless for two years or even more.
Unfortunately, you can have your degree certificate framed on your wall and still be financially struggling.
Unfortunately, you can be brilliant, hardworking, and qualified and still get zero responses from job applications.
Here’s what I've observed, the world moved forward, and the education system didn't move with it.
For some of us, our parents gave us the same advice that worked for them: "Go to school, study hard, get good grades, and you'll get a good job."
Looking at it, that advice wasn't wrong when they gave it, it was literally based on their experience.
And honestly, It was the truth for their generation but it's not the complete truth for ours.
Today's employers aren't just looking for people with degrees. They're looking for people who can actually perform from day one.
Can you use Excel to analyze data?
Can you manage a project using digital tools?
Can you write emails and at the same time manage emails?
Can you create content for social media?
Can you run online ads?
Do you understand how to work remotely?
These are the questions employers are asking now.
And most of us, called graduated can't answer "yes" because school didn't teach us these things.
Our universities taught us theories, concepts, and frameworks.
They gave us textbooks knowledge. And such knowledge is valuable, trust me
But employers want skills.
They want proof that you can do the job, not just that you studied a course.
That's the gap.
The space between what school taught us and what the job market actually needs.
And that gap is why so many educated young people are unemployed or underemployed.
Well, all hope is not lost because this gap can be closed.
You are not powerless here.
Our parents took responsibility for our formal education. They paid school fees. They supported us through university. They did their part with what they knew.
Now it's our responsibility to complete what they started. To give ourselves the additional skills that will make our education actually useful in today's market.
Your degree is not a waste.
But it's also not enough by itself.
Think of your degree as a key. A key is valuable, but only if you know which doors it can open and how to use it.
