four rooms. four curators who understood the assignment.
motion chose mambah and let the space earn its keep no excess, no performance, just the music and the room agreeing with each other. group therapy climbed to stranger village, an unfinished structure on the cliffs of asokoro, and made the incompleteness part of the experience. recess walked into the glasshouse on a wednesday and turned it into something you couldn’t talk yourself out of attending. concept took the rooftop at jakes at 1am, abuja’s skyline behind everything, and made you feel like the city finally had somewhere to look at itself.
this is what curation looks like when it’s intentional.

Before motion, abuja had a type. a safe orbit of sounds the city kept returning to familiar, predictable, comfortable. no one was asking for more because no one had heard what more could feel like.
Adeyi and Pasta didn’t wait for the city to catch up. they read the room before the room knew what it wanted, and when they moved, the crowd moved with them not because they were told to, but because something in the sound already felt like home. the cry didn’t arrive first. the crowd did. and the crowd became part of the architecture.
that’s the thing about motion. it was never discovered. it was built body by body, night by night, since november 2022. still running. still full. still the room where afro house found its footing in the capital.
abuja didn’t receive afro house. motion built it here. and the city hasn’t been the same since.

We’ve been watching Coasta for a year.
The early Tempo nights when the room was still figuring him out, still deciding whether to move or stand still. Then the moment it clicked. The crowd going crazy when he got on the decks. That shift from curiosity to surrender. We were there for that.
Recess was a different exercise. A different crowd, a different palette. He couldn’t go too deep the taste wasn’t there yet so he played the edges. Dropped snippets. Teased the sound without forcing it. Then at Tempo he went full mayhem. Those sets were quietly some of his best work. Discipline dressed as restraint.
Gqom. Afro house. Amapiano. Afro tech. Two residencies. Two rooms. One direction.
Coasta has been introducing Abuja to sounds it didn’t know it needed Wednesday to Friday, week after week. Quietly. Consistently. And there is more coming.
