🚨 Cross River Reduces Transport Tickets for Inter-City Drivers

The Cross River State Government has approved a reduction in transport tickets paid by inter-city drivers operating across the state.

Under the new arrangement announced on Monday, August 17, 2026, drivers leaving Cross River through recognised inter-city transport operations will now pay ₦750, down from ₦1,350.

Drivers operating from private parks will also see their ticket reduced from ₦750 to ₦450.

The state government said the decision followed consultations with stakeholders in the transport sector and was aimed at reducing the financial burden on operators.

The new rates mean:
🚐 Recognised inter-city operations: ₦750 from ₦1,350 — ₦600 reduction.
🚐 Private parks: ₦450 from ₦750 — ₦300 reduction.

The government said the measure forms part of Governor Bassey Otu's efforts to reduce taxation and other charges affecting transport operators while creating a more business-friendly environment in the state.

🚨 17-Year-Old Accused of Killing Mother and Brother After ChatGPT Searches

A 17-year-old boy in Acton, Massachusetts, has been charged with allegedly killing his mother and 14-year-old brother, after prosecutors said he had used ChatGPT and the internet to explore fictional scenarios involving the killing of his family.

The suspect, Arjun Aravind, faces two counts of murder. His mother, 45-year-old Sudha Venkatesan, and his younger brother, 14-year-old Siddharth Aravind, were found dead inside their family home.

According to prosecutors, investigators discovered that Aravind had used ChatGPT hours before the killings to explore “theoretical ideas or fantasy stories” involving the deaths of family members.

Police later found Aravind in his mother's vehicle in nearby Wayland and arrested him. He has pleaded not guilty and is being held without bail.

Authorities have not said that ChatGPT caused the killings, and the teenager's motive remains under investigation.

The case has nevertheless sparked fresh debate over how AI chatbots can be used by vulnerable people to explore violent thoughts—and where the responsibility lies when fictional conversations potentially overlap with real-world crimes.

Professor Eno Macaulay Ukpong holds a remarkable place in the history of the University of Calabar: she is recognised as the first student ever admitted into UNICAL, earning the historic student number 001. UNICAL Radio International featured her in 2025 specifically as the university’s “very first student.”

She later built an impressive academic career at the institution, becoming a Professor of Educational Psychology in the Faculty of Education. She has also served as Head of Department, Dean of the Faculty of Education and Dean of Students Affairs at another federal university.

Interestingly, Professor Ukpong's connection with UNICAL goes far beyond being its first admitted student — she eventually returned to the institution as an academic and became part of the generation that helped shape the university.
