LG Autonomy Under Threat: Governors Lobby Tinubu to Block Direct Allocation

Nigerian governors are reportedly lobbying President Bola Tinubu to delay the implementation of direct payment of federal allocation to local government councils. This comes after the Supreme Court's landmark judgment affirming the fiscal autonomy of local governments nationwide.

According to sources, the governors are citing the need to address multi-billion dollar debts allegedly incurred by the councils as a reason for the delay. They are pushing for the disbursements to be sent to commercial bank accounts instead of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), as mandated by the CBN.

The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has expressed concerns that the governors' actions may be aimed at diverting local government funds to settle debts. ALGON's Secretary-General, Mohammed Abubakar, urged the CBN to provide clear guidelines on account submissions and signatory verification for local government chairmen.

President Tinubu had previously stated that his administration was not in conflict with state governors over local government autonomy, but rather sought collaboration to drive development at the grassroots level.

WHILE FAAC DELAYS,FINTIRI DELIVERS!

Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has once again demonstrated financial leadership by ensuring that local government workers in Adamawa receive their February salaries—even before the federal government releases the monthly FAAC allocation. At a time when many states are still waiting for funds from Abuja, Adamawa is proving that it can stand on its own, thanks to a growing internally generated revenue (IGR).

As of today ,March 16th , federal government is yet to release February FAAC allocation to local governments across the country.

Under Fintiri’s leadership, Adamawa is gradually becoming a self-sustaining state, reducing its reliance on federal allocations. The state’s increasing IGR has made it possible to fulfill salary obligations on time, setting an example for others to follow. While other states struggle with financial uncertainty, Adamawa continues to move forward, prioritizing the welfare of its workers and proving that strategic governance can drive economic independence.
