“Your Honour, my client requests that this marriage be dissolved due to irreconcilable differences. They argue that Peace ( the wife) has left their home permanently.”
The judge adjusted his glasses. “And where did peace go?”
Mr. Adewale jumped up immediately. “My Lord, peace packed her bags since last year December! She even left with my remote control!”
Mrs. Adewale didn’t look up. “That remote was controlling my life, Your Honour.”
The courtroom murmured. Even the court clerk almost laughed.
The judge sighed. “Madam, do you agree the marriage is broken?”
She paused. Slowly stood up.
“Yes, My Lord. The marriage is… broken. But not beyond repair.”
Everyone froze. Mr. Adewale turned sharply.
“Broken is broken! Don’t start poetry here!”
The judge raised his hand. “Continue, Madam.”
She adjusted her wrapper calmly. “My Lord, I came here prepared for divorce. I even mentally shared my pots, plates, and blender. But there is one small issue…”
She hesitated.
The courtroom leaned forward.
“I am pregnant.”
Silence.
Then confusion.
Then a cough.
Then someone in the gallery whispered, “Ahhh… this case just changed direction like Uber driver.”
Mr. Adewale blinked. “Pregnant? Madam, with who’s authorization?”
She looked at him slowly. “Last time I checked, you were still involved in the process.”
The judge leaned forward, suddenly more interested than before. “How far along?”
“Six months, My Lord.”
The judge removed his glasses slowly. “So you people filed for divorce… and carried on with… extracurricular activities?”
Mr. Adewale shouted, “My Lord! That was emotional confusion!”
Mrs. Adewale replied calmly, “My Lord, even confusion needs company sometimes.”
The courtroom erupted in laughter. The court clerk actually had to hit the table.
The judge raised his hand again. “Order! Order!”
After a moment of silence, he spoke:
“So let me understand. You want divorce… but you are expecting a child together?”
Both of them nodded, reluctantly.
The judge leaned back. “This marriage is behaving like a generator: it refuses to start, but when it starts, nobody wants to switch it off.”
More laughter.
Then he gave his ruling:
“This court will adjourn this case for nine months. Not for legal review—but for medical delivery.”
He pointed at Mr. Adewale. “You will attend antenatal classes.”
Then at Mrs. Adewale. “You will stop threatening divorce during pregnancy hormones.”
Finally, he concluded:
“After the child is born, if you still want divorce, we will continue. But for now… go home and argue in peace. Court dismissed.”
