SUNDAY SERVICE SERMON
THE GOD WHO FIGHTS FOR YOU
Your Battle Is Not Yours Alone

“Thus saith the LORD unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God's.”
Beloved, there are seasons in life when the challenges before us appear greater than our strength, when the opposition seems stronger than our resources, and when the circumstances surrounding us make the future look uncertain.
There are battles that come unexpectedly. There are situations we never planned for, difficulties we never imagined, and struggles we do not always know how to explain to others.
Sometimes, you pray, yet the situation appears unchanged. You make every legitimate effort to find a solution, but the problem remains. You seek advice, explore opportunities, and do everything within your ability, yet the answer seems far away.
But I have come to remind someone today that you are not alone in the battles of life. The God you serve is greater than the challenges you face.
The Bible tells us in 2 Chronicles 20 that King Jehoshaphat received disturbing news. A great multitude of enemies was coming against Judah. The situation was frightening, and the king knew that his army could not easily overcome such a large force.
Yet, instead of surrendering to fear, Jehoshaphat sought the Lord. He gathered the people of Judah, proclaimed a fast, and called upon God for divine intervention.
In response, God sent a prophetic message through Jahaziel:
“Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God's.” — 2 Chronicles 20:15 (KJV)
What a remarkable assurance!
God did not tell Jehoshaphat that there was no enemy. He did not deny the size of the army. He did not pretend that the threat was imaginary. Instead, He assured the king that the battle would not be decided by human strength alone.
This is the message for us today: The presence of a battle does not mean the absence of God.
You may be facing challenges in your marriage, family, finances, business, career, ministry, health, or personal life. Whatever the situation may be, God remains your refuge, your strength, your helper, and your defender.
Today, we will discover how to respond to life's battles through faith, prayer, obedience, worship, and complete dependence on God.
1. EVERY BELIEVER WILL FACE BATTLES
Scripture: John 16:33 (KJV)
“These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”
One of the mistakes believers sometimes make is assuming that serving God means they will never experience difficulties.
However, Jesus made it clear that challenges are part of life in this world. The difference is that believers have a Saviour who has overcome the world.
Consider the lives of some biblical personalities.
- Abraham faced the challenge of waiting for the fulfilment of God's promise.
- Joseph experienced betrayal, false accusation, and imprisonment.
- Moses faced Pharaoh and the impossible-looking obstacle of the Red Sea.
- David confronted Goliath and later endured opposition from King Saul.
- Daniel faced a death sentence because of his devotion to God.
- Paul endured persecution, imprisonment, and many hardships for the gospel.
These individuals experienced different battles, but their circumstances did not cancel God's purpose for their lives.
A challenge does not necessarily mean that you are outside God's will. Sometimes, you can be walking in obedience and still encounter opposition.
The important question is not whether you will ever face a battle. The important question is how you will respond when it comes.
Spiritual lesson: Do not measure God's faithfulness by the absence of challenges. Learn to trust Him even when you are walking through difficult circumstances.
Practical application:
- Do not abandon your faith when difficulties arise.
- Do not allow temporary circumstances to define your entire future.
- Seek biblical wisdom and appropriate help when facing complex situations.
- Continue to obey God, even when the outcome is not immediately clear.
Declaration: I will not lose my faith because of the battles I face. God is with me, and He will guide me through every season.
2. YOUR FIRST RESPONSE TO BATTLE SHOULD BE TO SEEK GOD
Scripture: 2 Chronicles 20:3–4 (KJV)
“And Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to seek the LORD, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah.”
When Jehoshaphat heard that a great army was approaching, the Bible says that he feared. His response reminds us that faith does not mean pretending that we are never afraid.
Fear is a human response to danger, uncertainty, or a serious threat. But fear should not become the authority directing our decisions.
Jehoshaphat responded to the threat by seeking God.
He did not begin by boasting about his military strength. He did not depend solely on human strategy. He turned to the One whose wisdom and ability were greater than his own.
There is a significant difference between reacting to a problem in panic and responding to it through prayerful dependence on God.
Prayer does not mean refusing to take responsible action. Rather, it places our decisions, plans, and concerns before God so that we can act with wisdom and faith.
Philippians 4:6–7 teaches us not to be anxious but to bring our requests to God through prayer and supplication with thanksgiving. God's peace can guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
When you face a battle:
- Pray before making decisions driven by fear.
- Seek the guidance of Scripture.
- Ask God for wisdom and discernment.
- Seek godly counsel where necessary.
- Take responsible steps as God leads you.
Practical lesson: The intensity of your challenge should not reduce the importance of your prayer life. Let difficult situations draw you closer to God rather than further away from Him.
Declaration: This week, I will seek the Lord in every decision. I receive wisdom, discernment, and peace to respond appropriately to every challenge.
3. REMEMBER THAT GOD IS GREATER THAN THE PROBLEM
Scripture: 2 Chronicles 20:6 (KJV)
“And said, O LORD God of our fathers, art not thou God in heaven? and rulest not thou over all the kingdoms of the heathen? and in thine hand is there not power and might, so that none is able to withstand thee?”
Jehoshaphat began his prayer by acknowledging who God is.
Before describing the full weight of the problem, he reminded himself and the people of God's sovereignty.
This is a vital principle of faith. When we focus exclusively on the size of our problems, we can become overwhelmed. But when we remember God's character, faith is strengthened.
The enemy facing Judah was large, but God was greater. The threat was real, but God's authority was greater than the threat.
Jeremiah 32:27 says:
“Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh: is there any thing too hard for me?”
God is not limited by human resources, social status, financial circumstances, or the opinions of others.
He can provide wisdom when you do not know what to do. He can sustain you when your strength is failing. He can open a way where a legitimate opportunity seems unavailable. He can also give you grace to endure when the circumstances do not change immediately.
However, trusting God's greatness does not mean demanding that He fulfil every personal desire exactly as we imagine. Faith rests in God's wisdom, character, and perfect will.
Practical application:
When facing a challenge, remind yourself of:
- God's faithfulness in Scripture.
- The ways He has sustained you in the past.
- His promises concerning His presence and guidance.
- His ability to give you wisdom and strength for the present.
Declaration: My God is greater than every challenge I face. I will not allow the size of my circumstances to diminish my confidence in His faithfulness.
4. GOD EXPECTS YOU TO TRUST HIM EVEN WHEN YOU DO NOT KNOW THE WAY FORWARD
Scripture: 2 Chronicles 20:12 (KJV)
“O our God, wilt thou not judge them? for we have no might against this great company that cometh against us; neither know we what to do: but our eyes are upon thee.”
One of the most honest prayers in the Bible is found in this verse.
Jehoshaphat admitted that the people did not have sufficient strength to face the approaching army. He also admitted that they did not know what to do.
But he ended with a declaration of dependence: “Our eyes are upon thee.”
This is an important expression of faith. Faith does not require us to know every detail of the future. It requires us to place our confidence in God as He leads us forward.
There are times when you may not know how your financial situation will improve, how a family difficulty will be resolved, or how a ministry challenge will be addressed.
You may not have all the answers today. But you can seek God's wisdom for the next step.
Proverbs 3:5–6 says:
“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”
Trusting God involves surrendering the need to control every outcome while remaining responsible for the decisions within your reach.
Do not confuse uncertainty about the future with the absence of God's guidance.
Practical application:
- Identify what is within your responsibility.
- Pray about what is beyond your control.
- Avoid decisions motivated by desperation.
- Follow God's Word and seek wise counsel.
- Take the next faithful step, even if you cannot yet see the entire journey.
Declaration: Even when I do not know what to do, my eyes are upon the Lord. He will give me wisdom and direct my steps.
5. GOD CAN SEND DIRECTION WHEN YOU NEED IT MOST
Scripture: 2 Chronicles 20:14–15 (KJV)
“Then upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah... came the Spirit of the LORD in the midst of the congregation.”
At a moment of uncertainty, God sent a message through Jahaziel.
The message was clear: Judah should not be afraid because the battle belonged to God.
This reminds us that God can guide His people through Scripture, the leading of the Holy Spirit, wise counsel, and circumstances understood through biblical discernment.
However, every claimed spiritual instruction must be tested against Scripture. We should not accept every prediction or declaration simply because someone presents it as a message from God.
First John 4:1 instructs believers to test the spirits. God's guidance will not contradict His revealed Word or lead us into sin.
God's direction may come as:
- Wisdom to make a difficult decision.
- Conviction to correct a wrong attitude.
- Courage to take a necessary step.
- Clarity to recognize an opportunity.
- Patience to wait rather than act prematurely.
- Strength to endure a season that cannot immediately be changed.
In the case of Jehoshaphat, God gave specific direction for the battle. The king and the people were required to listen and respond in obedience.
Practical lesson: Do not seek spiritual direction merely to confirm what you have already decided to do. Seek God's wisdom with a heart that is willing to obey.
Declaration: May the Lord grant me discernment to recognize His guidance, humility to receive correction, and courage to obey His Word.
6. OBEDIENCE IS AN IMPORTANT EXPRESSION OF FAITH
Scripture: 2 Chronicles 20:17 (KJV)
“Ye shall not need to fight in this battle: set yourselves, stand ye still, and see the salvation of the LORD with you...”
God gave Judah instructions for the situation they faced.
They were told where to position themselves and what to expect. Their responsibility was to follow the direction they had received.
Faith is not merely agreeing that God can act. Biblical faith also involves trusting Him enough to obey His Word.
Noah demonstrated obedience by building the ark. Abraham demonstrated obedience by following God's call. The servants at the wedding in Cana demonstrated obedience when Jesus instructed them to fill the waterpots.
Obedience does not purchase God's love or guarantee that every situation will unfold according to our preferred timetable. Rather, it is a response of trust and devotion to Him.
Sometimes obedience means speaking the truth when it is difficult. At other times, it means forgiving, making restitution, seeking reconciliation, managing resources responsibly, or leaving a harmful situation.
Do not use the language of faith as an excuse to avoid your responsibilities.
If you are praying for financial provision, you may also need to develop financial discipline, improve your skills, seek employment, or make wise business decisions.
If you are praying for peace in your home, you may need to communicate honestly, apologize, listen, and establish healthy boundaries.
If you are praying for ministry growth, you may need to serve faithfully, teach sound doctrine, develop leaders, and care for people.
Practical application: Ask yourself, “Is there an instruction from God's Word that I need to obey in this situation?”
Declaration: I receive grace to obey God faithfully. My faith will be demonstrated through godly choices, integrity, patience, and responsible action.
7. WORSHIP CAN STRENGTHEN YOUR FAITH IN THE MIDDLE OF BATTLE
Scripture: 2 Chronicles 20:21–22 (KJV)
“And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the LORD, and that should praise the beauty of holiness...”
Jehoshaphat appointed singers to praise the Lord as Judah went out to face the approaching enemy.
Their worship was not a denial of the danger before them. It was an expression of confidence in God and obedience to His direction.
Worship redirects our attention from our fears to the character and faithfulness of God.
When Paul and Silas were imprisoned, they prayed and sang praises to God at midnight (Acts 16:25). Their worship took place in the middle of hardship, not after every difficulty had disappeared.
Worship can:
- Strengthen your awareness of God's faithfulness.
- Help you resist despair.
- Remind you of biblical truth.
- Encourage gratitude during difficult seasons.
- Unite believers in their devotion to God.
We must not treat worship as a technique for forcing God to produce a particular result. God is worthy of worship regardless of whether our circumstances change immediately.
Praise is not a substitute for prayer, wisdom, or action. It is an essential part of a life centred on God.
Practical application:
- Make time for personal worship.
- Read and meditate on Psalms.
- Give thanks for God's past faithfulness.
- Join with other believers in sincere worship.
- Keep your heart anchored in God's Word.
Declaration: My circumstances will not silence my worship. I will praise God in every season because He remains faithful and worthy of honour.
8. GOD CAN TURN A SEASON OF FEAR INTO A TESTIMONY
Scripture: 2 Chronicles 20:22–24
As Judah began to sing and praise, the Lord caused confusion among the opposing armies, and they turned against one another. When Judah arrived at the place from which they were to observe the battle, the enemy forces had been defeated.
This was a remarkable intervention in a particular moment in Israel's history. It demonstrated God's ability to deliver His people in ways they could not have achieved by their own strength.
The passage should not be treated as a promise that every conflict today will end in the same way. God's deliverance can take different forms. Sometimes He changes the situation; sometimes He gives us endurance, wisdom, support, and peace while we walk through it.
The testimony of Judah reminds us that God is able to intervene beyond our expectations.
The God who delivered Judah is still sovereign. He can help His people navigate challenges, provide solutions, protect them from harm, and give them courage to remain faithful.
A difficult season does not have to be the final chapter of your story.
Joseph's imprisonment eventually gave way to a position of responsibility in Egypt. Hannah's sorrow was followed by the birth of Samuel. The disciples' grief following the crucifixion of Jesus gave way to the joy of the resurrection.
God's work in our lives may not always follow the pattern we expect, but we can trust His wisdom and remain faithful.
Declaration: May the Lord turn my trials into opportunities for spiritual growth, my struggles into testimonies of His faithfulness, and my fears into renewed confidence in Him.
9. GOD IS YOUR REFUGE AND STRENGTH IN EVERY SEASON
Scripture: Psalm 46:1 (KJV)
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
A refuge is a place of safety. Strength is the ability to endure, stand, and continue. The psalmist describes God as both.
This means that God is not only concerned with the outcome of our battles. He is also present with us while we are going through them.
There are believers who are facing difficulties that may not disappear overnight. Some are caring for sick family members. Some are grieving. Some are experiencing financial hardship. Others are dealing with disappointment, loneliness, or uncertainty.
In these seasons, we need more than promises of immediate change. We need the assurance of God's presence, the comfort of His Word, and the support of a caring Christian community.
Isaiah 41:10 says:
“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee...”
God's presence is an anchor for the believer.
Do not suffer in silence when support is available. Reach out to trusted family members, mature believers, pastoral leaders, or qualified professionals when appropriate.
God can work through people, practical assistance, wise counsel, and the support of the church.
Declaration: The Lord is my refuge and strength. He will sustain me, guide me, and help me remain faithful through every season.
10. DO NOT FIGHT PEOPLE WHEN GOD CALLS YOU TO WALK IN LOVE
Scripture: Ephesians 6:12 (KJV)
“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”
The Bible teaches believers to recognize the spiritual dimension of Christian life. Yet this verse must never be used as an excuse to hate, threaten, persecute, or mistreat other people.
Our response to opposition must remain consistent with the teachings of Jesus.
Romans 12:18 says:
“If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.”
Jesus taught His followers to love their enemies, pray for those who persecute them, and reject revenge (Matthew 5:44; Romans 12:19).
Not every disagreement is a spiritual attack. Some conflicts arise from misunderstanding, poor communication, wrongdoing, or competing interests. These situations may require honest conversation, accountability, mediation, or appropriate boundaries.
Spiritual maturity means refusing to allow bitterness, hatred, or revenge to control our decisions.
You can stand firmly for truth without becoming cruel. You can establish boundaries without harbouring hatred. You can seek justice while refusing to take personal revenge.
Practical application:
- Examine your own conduct honestly.
- Refuse to repay evil with evil.
- Pursue peace where it is safe and appropriate.
- Seek help if you are experiencing abuse, threats, or serious wrongdoing.
- Pray for wisdom to respond with both truth and love.
Declaration: I will not be controlled by bitterness or revenge. May God give me wisdom to stand for truth, pursue peace, and respond to others with the character of Christ.
11. YOUR BATTLE MUST NOT MAKE YOU FORGET YOUR PURPOSE
Scripture: Romans 8:28 (KJV)
“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”
One of the dangers of prolonged difficulty is that it can consume our attention until we forget the other responsibilities and purposes God has entrusted to us.
A financial challenge should not make you abandon your integrity. A family conflict should not make you neglect your relationship with God. A ministry disappointment should not make you lose compassion for people.
Romans 8:28 does not say that every event is good in itself. It assures believers that God is at work for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose.
God can use difficult experiences to develop perseverance, compassion, wisdom, humility, and spiritual maturity.
Joseph's experience illustrates how God can work through painful events without calling the wrongdoing of others good. In Genesis 50:20, Joseph acknowledged that although others intended evil against him, God used the situation to preserve many lives.
Do not let a difficult season destroy the character God is developing in you.
Continue to serve. Continue to learn. Continue to love. Continue to grow in the Word. Continue to fulfil the responsibilities that are rightly yours.
Declaration: My present challenges will not erase God's purpose for my life. I will continue to grow in faith, character, love, and service.
12. JESUS CHRIST IS OUR ULTIMATE VICTORY
Scripture: 1 Corinthians 15:57 (KJV)
“But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
The greatest victory God has given humanity is not simply a financial breakthrough, an answered prayer, or a successful outcome in a difficult situation. The greatest victory is the salvation offered through Jesus Christ.
Through His death and resurrection, Jesus defeated the power of sin and death and opened the way for us to be reconciled to God.
Romans 8:31 asks:
“If God be for us, who can be against us?”
This does not mean that Christians will never experience persecution, suffering, loss, or hardship. The same chapter acknowledges that believers may experience tribulation, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, peril, and the sword.
Yet Paul declares that none of these things can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:35–39).
Our confidence is therefore deeper than temporary circumstances. We belong to Christ, and our eternal hope rests in Him.
If you have not yet surrendered your life to Jesus, today is an opportunity to receive Him as your Lord and Saviour.
Declaration: My hope is in Jesus Christ. Through Him, I have forgiveness, new life, and an eternal inheritance. Nothing can separate me from the love of God in Christ Jesus.
PROPHETIC DECLARATIONS OVER THE CHURCH
In the name of Jesus Christ, I declare over every member of this church:
1. May the Lord strengthen your faith in every difficult season.
2. May God grant you wisdom to make decisions that honour Him.
3. May the peace of Christ guard your heart and mind.
4. May the Lord provide for your legitimate needs and establish the work of your hands.
5. May God grant healing, comfort, and renewed strength to those who are suffering.
6. May the Lord bring reconciliation, love, and understanding into families where peace has been lost.
7. May God guide our children and young people in truth, wisdom, and godly character.
8. May the Lord protect our households and preserve us as we go out and come in.
9. May God raise faithful helpers, wise counsellors, and genuine friends at the right time.
10. May the Lord grant our church unity, spiritual maturity, and a renewed passion for evangelism.
11. May those who are discouraged receive fresh hope through the Word of God.
12. May every member grow in holiness, integrity, love, and commitment to Christ.
13. May the Lord give us grace to overcome temptation and remain faithful in our calling.
14. May God guide us through every uncertain situation and help us recognize the right path.
15. May our lives become testimonies of God's grace, faithfulness, and goodness.
We declare that we will not surrender our faith to fear, our integrity to pressure, or our hope to discouragement. We will continue to trust the Lord, obey His Word, and walk in the victory secured for us through Jesus Christ. Amen!
Heavenly Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, we come before You with gratitude and reverence.
Thank You because You are our refuge, our strength, our provider, and our helper in times of trouble. Thank You because Your faithfulness does not fail, and Your mercy is renewed every morning.
Father, we bring every member of this church before You. You know every family, every secret burden, every unanswered question, and every challenge that each person is facing.
Lord, arise with Your wisdom and help us to respond to our circumstances in ways that honour You. Where there is confusion, grant clarity. Where there is fear, grant courage. Where there is weakness, provide strength. Where there is sorrow, bring comfort. Where there is need, provide according to Your perfect will.
Father, we pray for those facing financial difficulties. Open doors to honest opportunities, grant wisdom in managing resources, and provide the help they need.
We pray for families experiencing conflict. Grant humility, patience, understanding, forgiveness, and reconciliation wherever it is safe and appropriate.
We pray for the sick and those experiencing emotional distress. Grant healing according to Your will, comfort those who are suffering, and guide them to the appropriate care and support they need.
Father, strengthen our pastors, ministers, workers, and leaders. Give them wisdom to serve Your people with humility, compassion, integrity, and sound doctrine.
Let our church become a place of prayer, love, discipleship, truth, and genuine care. May our lives reflect the character of Jesus Christ, and may many people come to know Him through our witness.
Lord, teach us to trust You when we do not understand our circumstances. Help us to remain faithful while we wait, obedient when You direct us, and grateful in every season.
We surrender every battle into Your hands. Lead us according to Your wisdom, and let Your perfect will be accomplished in our lives.
In the mighty name of Jesus Christ, we pray.
AMEN!
Beloved, the greatest battle in human life is the separation between humanity and God because of sin. No amount of material success, social recognition, or human achievement can replace the salvation that comes through Jesus Christ.
Romans 3:23 says:
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”
But Romans 10:9 declares:
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”
Jesus Christ died for our sins and rose again so that everyone who believes in Him may receive forgiveness and eternal life.
If you have not surrendered your life to Jesus, or if you have wandered away from Him and desire to return, you can respond to Him today.
Heavenly Father, I come before You in the name of Jesus Christ. I acknowledge that I am a sinner and that I need Your forgiveness.
I believe that Jesus Christ died for my sins and rose again from the dead. I repent of my sins and surrender my life to Him.
Lord Jesus, come into my heart. Be my Lord and Saviour. Forgive me, cleanse me, and give me a new life.
Help me to follow You, obey Your Word, and grow in faith. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit and lead me in Your righteousness.
From today, I belong to Jesus Christ. By Your grace, I will serve You and remain faithful to You.
In Jesus' name, Amen.

CONCLUSION — THE BATTLE IS NOT YOUR FINAL STORY
Beloved, the story of Jehoshaphat teaches us that the presence of opposition does not mean that God has abandoned His people.
When the king faced a great multitude, he sought the Lord. He acknowledged his limitations, trusted God's direction, and led the people in worship.
The outcome was a remarkable demonstration of God's intervention.
As we leave this service, let us carry these truths into the week ahead:
- When challenges arise, seek God.
- When fear comes, remember God's faithfulness.
- When you do not know what to do, ask for wisdom.
- When God gives direction through His Word, obey.
- When circumstances are difficult, continue to worship.
- When facing opposition, refuse hatred and revenge.
- When you experience victory, give God the glory.
Your battle is not your identity. Your present circumstances do not determine your worth. Your hope is not founded on human strength but on the faithfulness of God through Jesus Christ.
May the Lord give you strength for every battle, wisdom for every decision, peace in every storm, and grace to remain faithful until the end.
Do not allow the battle to take your eyes away from God.
The God who sustained Abraham, strengthened Moses, preserved Daniel, delivered Judah, and raised Jesus Christ from the dead is worthy of your trust.
Stand firm in the Word. Pray without ceasing. Walk in love. Act with wisdom. Remain faithful to your calling.
May your life become a living testimony of God's grace, and may everything you do bring glory to Jesus Christ.
