My journey into graphic design started in a very unexpected way. At the beginning, I had no real passion or plans of becoming a designer. Everything changed the day I saw a close friend—someone I consider a brother—posting his design work online and identifying himself as a graphic designer. Something about that moment caught my attention, and without overthinking it, I reached out to him and asked if he could teach me.
At the time, I wasn’t even sure how serious I was, but I found myself consistently asking and pushing to learn. Since we attended the same church, I got the opportunity to meet him during a retreat. After the program, I approached him again, and this time he agreed. We sat together in a car, and that was where my first real design lesson began. He introduced me to the basics using Canva, explained what design really meant, and broke down concepts like flyers.
That moment sparked something in me.
Not long after, I shared my new interest with my brother, who also had experience in design. He introduced me to PixelLab, which was completely new to me at the time. I didn’t know how to use it, but I was determined. I joined multiple Facebook groups, explored resources on my own, and gradually began to understand the process.
A major turning point in my journey was meeting Jerry Visual, a professional graphic designer and mentor. I joined his free training, where I learned valuable skills that shaped my growth. Although I couldn’t initially afford his mastery class, I was determined to improve. I went as far as working on farms to raise money because I truly believed in the value of what I was learning.
Jerry Visual played a huge role in my development. His guidance and dedication to his students helped me grow, and through his mentorship, I was able to secure my first client. That experience meant everything to me—it was proof that my efforts were paying off.
Today, I am proud to say that I have grown into a professional graphic designer. What started as curiosity has now become a skill, a career, and a passion.
My journey is still ongoing, but one thing is certain: consistency, determination, and the right guidance can turn even the most unexpected beginnings into something great.
