My first real lesson in positioning came during COVID.
I was a new mum.
Before then, I was into fashion and bag-making.
Souvenirs, tote bags, that kind of thing.
Then lockdown happened, and oh my gosh! 😭😅
A baby in my hands. No business. Very broke. Very frustrated!!
Then somehow, I found copywriting.
It made sense because I had always liked writing, and I wasn’t a great marketer in my fashion business.
So I took my first course and started positioning myself on Instagram, sharing how businesses could sell better with words.
In less than a month, someone was in DM, cash in hand, asking for my service. LOL
It felt so unreal and exciting!!!
That experience taught me something I still believe today:
If people don’t know what you know, they won’t know when to call you.
The opportunities may already be out there.
But when you’re hidden, they’ll go to the person who is visible and clear.
A year or so later, I moved more seriously into LinkedIn.
And since then, this platform has brought me jobs, freelance work, contracts, referrals, and earnings in multiple currencies.
Even now, when people refer me to new clients,
They check my LinkedIn profile.
And my profile supports the referral.
Someone once saw an article contribution elsewhere, checked out my LinkedIn, and then reached out about a contract.
That is what positioning does.
It helps people trust what they’ve heard about you,
And gives your credibility somewhere to land.
Think about it.
PS: Do you remember the first time online visibility brought you a significant opportunity?
