MOHBAD: COURT TO RULE ON ORDER SEEKING REOPENING OF INVESTIGATION SEPTEMBER 29
The Federal High Court in Abuja is set to deliver its judgment on an application seeking an Order of Mandamus compelling the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to reopen investigations into the death of late singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.
According to a September 21, 2026 letter signed by Yomi Fabiyi, Convener and President of Break The Silence Foundation, judgment in the suit, FHC/ABJ/CS/636/2026, has been reserved for September 29, 2026, before Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja.
The foundation said it is seeking a court order compelling the police to investigate what it described as “multiple and credible new leads” allegedly overlooked during the earlier investigation and to prosecute any suspects found culpable.
The letter further states that an improved criminal investigation was initiated following a directive from the Presidency, separate from the earlier investigation conducted by the Lagos Police Command. According to the foundation, the FCID homicide department in Abuja had completed its report by June 2025.
The foundation alleges that the investigation identified eight persons of interest in connection with the circumstances surrounding Mohbad's death and listed alleged offences including criminal conspiracy, theft and concealment of evidence. These remain allegations and would be subject to investigation and judicial determination.
The organisation also stated that Omowunmi Cynthia Adebayo and two other suspects were arrested in October/November 2025 but were subsequently granted bail. The foundation said it had raised concerns over what it described as irregularities in the handling of the matter.
The letter was addressed to news editors and correspondents as the foundation called for continued public attention to the case ahead of the September 29 court proceedings.
Mohbad died in September 2023 at the age of 27. His death generated widespread public concern and calls for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding it
