The Man Behind Tecno, Itel, and Infinix

______

Most people don’t know that a Nigerian entrepreneur Nnamdi Ezeigbo was instrumental in the rise of Tecno and Infinix.

In the early 2000s, while running a phone repair and retail shop in Lagos, Ezeigbo noticed a recurring frustration: Nigerians were juggling two phones because no single device supported dual SIMs.

His insight was simple but bold:
Why not build a phone that takes two SIM cards—so people can carry just one device?

He pitched the idea to Nokia, then the industry giant.

They turned him down.

Their reasoning? More SIMs per phone meant fewer handsets sold—and that clashed with their bottom line.

But Ezeigbo didn't give up.

In 2006, he partnered with China's Transsion Holdings to create Tecno—a brand built specifically for Africa, with dual-SIM functionality, long-lasting batteries, and affordable prices.

Infinix and Itel soon followed, and together, they reshaped the continent's mobile landscape.

Today, these brands rank among Africa's best-selling smartphones—proof that one local insight can change an entire industry.
