🌍 How Google Sees Website Domains for SEO (Country Edition)
Google’s main job is to show people the best result for their location and what they want.
1️⃣ Country-specific domains rank best in their country
Examples: .com.au for Australia, .co.uk for the UK, .ca for Canada.
If two sites are equal in every way, the one with the matching country domain will usually win in that country’s Google results.
2️⃣ .au vs .com.au — same for Google, small trust difference (for now)
Google treats them the same.
People are still a bit more used to .com.au, but this gap is shrinking.
3️⃣ Global domains are equal in Google’s eyes, but not in people’s minds
Global domains (gTLDs): .com, .net, .org, .co, .io, .ai, .dev, .xyz, etc.
Google doesn’t favour one over the other — but people do trust some more than others.
✅ More trusted: .com, .net, .org, .co, .io, .ai, .dev
⚠ Seen as spammy: .xyz, .top, .club, .info, .online, .buzz, .tk (and other very cheap or free ones)
If people trust your domain more, they click more — and this helps rankings indirectly.
4️⃣ .com is still the trust king
People often click .com more, which can help rankings (because of higher click-through rates).
📌 Final advice:
•Targeting one country? Use that country’s domain (like .com.au for Australia).
Going global? Pick a domain people trust, and avoid ones with a spammy reputation.
💡 Bonus:au and .com.au are equal in Google’s eyes, but humans are still slightly more used to .com.au — this will fade over time.
For domains like .builders or .fit:
Even though Google doesn’t penalise them, a lot of users:
• Have never seen the extension before
• Might assume it’s spammy or less credible
• Could get confused and type .com instead
That means:
• Lower click-through rate (CTR) from search results
• More brand leakage (people typing the wrong domain)
• Harder to build immediate trust unless your brand is already well-known
If you’re targeting a broad audience that’s not very tech-savvy, a well-recognised extension like .com or .com.au will almost always feel more trustworthy.
