1. Google your business name exactly as customers would search it.

Open an incognito window and type in your business name, location, or service. This shows you what a first-time customer actually sees.

2. Look at the first page results.

Scan through your website, social profiles, reviews, images, and comments. Check Google Business Profile, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, or anywhere else your business appears.

3. Ask yourself:

• Is the information accurate?
• Is my branding consistent?
• Does this page make someone trust me enough to buy?
• Is there a clear way for a customer to contact me?

4. Write down everything that looks outdated, unclear, missing, or unprofessional.

5. Create a "Fix List." Things you can update immediately (profile picture, description, website link, business hours, reviews).

Most customers decide in under 5 seconds whether to trust you. If the internet version of your business looks confusing or incomplete, they quietly move on to your competitors.

Solutions start with reducing JavaScript to eliminate bloat and accelerate load times, especially on mobile.

Cutting unused scripts and deferring non-essential tasks keeps code efficient.

Limiting web fonts tackles performance lags from excessive style requests. Using two font families or system fonts ensures fast rendering.

Optimizing images cuts load times further by compressing files, adopting WebP, and serving responsive sizes.

A client of mine wanted a website, but he didn’t have a prior design, mock-up, or template for me to reference.

All he had was an idea, which he communicated via text: "Make it good, aesthetically pleasing, yet minimal."

He gave me the web copy (write-up) and moved on.

I generated the images, crafted the layouts, and got everything else done.

He was blown away. He said it felt like I had entered his heart and pulled the idea out.

I jumped into full-time freelancing too soon. The funds I should’ve used to grow my career? I spent them just to survive. I couldn’t learn as deeply as I needed to because I was racing to make ends meet. I stayed on the ground too long.

𝗠𝘆 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲:

Get a job first, then ease into full-time freelancing. It gives you breathing room to survive and learn at your own pace—no pressure.

𝙈𝙮 𝙖𝙣𝙨𝙬𝙚𝙧:

I got a job. When I moved to Lagos in 2022, I started with a ₦60k salary, later ₦70k. I worked days and pursued tech at night—weekends, holidays, off days, all for my career. I kept going until my tech income surpassed my salary. Then I resigned.

If I could do it over, I’d aim for a better-paying job (maybe tech-related) and build my tech career alongside it. I jumped to freelancing when I was making an extra $100+ monthly—too early. I should’ve climbed higher financially before leaving the 9-5.

𝙃𝙚𝙧𝙚’𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙩𝙧𝙪𝙩𝙝:

You can settle if you want—tech isn’t the only way out of the trenches. But it’s a sure way to leave and stay out. If you’re in tech, don’t stop until you get it right.
