How do you get your first clients when you have ZERO reviews and ZERO portfolio?
This is one of the biggest problems new digital marketers face.
And here’s the uncomfortable truth:
You don’t need 50 reviews to get your first client.
You need to give someone a reason to trust you.
Here’s what I’d do if I were starting from zero:
1. Pick ONE type of business.
Don’t say:
“I help businesses with digital marketing.”
Too broad.
Instead:
“I help local restaurants generate more customers through Meta Ads.”
Specific = easier to understand.
2. Create your own case studies.
No clients yet?
Audit businesses publicly available online.
Find a website with poor conversion, a weak Google Business Profile, confusing messaging, or poorly structured social media.
Explain what you would change and WHY.
That’s proof of your thinking.
3. Offer a small, clearly defined service.
Don’t try to sell a $5,000 marketing package to someone who doesn’t know you.
Start with something measurable:
• Landing-page audit
• Meta Ads audit
• SEO audit
• Google Business Profile optimization
• Social media strategy
Make the first “yes” easy.
4. Stop waiting for people to discover you.
Find businesses you genuinely believe you can help.
Then send a personalized message explaining:
“I noticed X. Here’s what I’d change. Here’s why it could improve Y.”
That’s much stronger than:
“Hi, I’m a digital marketer. Do you need marketing?”
5. Document everything.
Your first client isn’t just revenue.
They’re the beginning of your portfolio.
Track the baseline.
Make improvements.
Measure the result.
Turn the experience into a case study—with the client’s permission.
Your first client is rarely won because you have the most reviews.
They’re won because the business owner believes:
“This person understands my problem and has a credible plan to solve it.”
If you’re a small business owner, that’s exactly what you should look for when hiring a marketer.
And if you’re a new marketer, remember:
You don’t need experience to start building evidence.
You need to start doing the work.
6. Let Your Existing Contact List Know What You Do
What do I mean, the organization that already knew you will give you job easier than total strangers, organization like church, mosque, friends, homies and all of that, I got my first job as a marketer from church forum when they ask everyone to post their job, I immediately rush to create my flyer and post my job, luckily I got a call, after view minutes of interview I got the job
I might say I didn’t get the job because of an excellent interview but because of the organization the client met me with.
