I DIDN’T STOP FOR TRAFFIC OFFICERS BECAUSE MY SON HAD EXAM BY 8:30AM
-says father of WAEC student accidentally shot dead in Ibadan

The father of the WAEC candidate shot in Ibadan yesterday, Mr Odunayo Alade, has revealed the reasons for not stopping when the police tried to block his way.

In a press interview today, he made it known that his son, Kehinde Alade, had an exam by 8:30am and if he had stopped, the police officers would have delayed his son.

He stated that he wasn’t aware that they were trying to stop him till they hit his vehicle.

“You know how Nigerian government works, once you fall into their traps. Moreover, the elder brother of the deceased was having 8:30 paper yesterday and if I should stop, they would have delayed the boy, that’s why I had to maneuver my way”

He made it known that he wasn’t aware his son had been shot till his twin brother raised the alert.

“After I left them, I just heard a gun shot, I didn’t stop. Then the boy in question was shouting Daddy, I even shouted at him that we had left the police already till his twin brother told me that he had been shot. I parked, brought him out and the place was soaked with blood.

“I didn’t know they were still coming after me and immediately I saw them, I hijacked one of them.”

Further speaking on the aspiration of his son, he said he wanted to become a lawyer.

“He was telling me last week that he would like to be a lawyer when he grows up.”

LESSONS FROM THE TRAGIC INCIDENT

I have always said it; as parents,we owe our children a duty and the duty is to be civilised when we are in the public. 3 sets of people killed that boy directly or indirectly.

The first was his father. This man used his lawlessness to cause the tragic death of his innocent son. The only thing he would have done right yesterday was first and foremost, obey the traffic rule of not passing one way. And after this rule was violated and he was about being apprehended, it would have cost him nothing to stop and listen to the ORTMA people. At most, they slam him a fine or confiscate his car. The reckless way at which he drove to escape the police and the ORTMA barricade was as if he stole that vehicle. It would have been better for the bullet to hit him instead of the innocent boy.

The second set of criminals here are the ORTMA officials. They are the only problem we have in Oyo state now. If your employers could not provide the necessary technology, why can't you use your brains. So just because somebody passed one way, you must chase him to death? This is not part of traffic rule enforcemebt. All the officers on that patrol should be arrested and prosecuted.

And of course, the last of the criminals are the men of the Nigerian Police, our so called very "good friends". They have consistently justified the reason why they are the product of a failed state. The same set of people who cannot face armed robbers are so eager to pull the trigger towards an unarmed person just because he disobeyed a traffic rule and refused being apprehended. If that incident had happened in a place like Beere or Ojoo, both the ORTMA and the police officials would have been burnt alive together with their vehicles.

In all, it is a lesson to us all as parents and road users to obey traffic rules. Whenevet we are in the car together, my children sometimes query while I am the only one waiting for the red light while others beside me drive by, and I always tell them that traffic lights are to be obeyed at all times. Another lesson is to comport ourselves whenever we have our family in the car. Argue less, talk less and drive carefully. I have also learnt from this because I no also dey give face to these traffic officers. They can provoke you.

Olorun o nii je ka foju sunkun omo o.
