☂️ Why do umbrellas outsell raincoats?

At first glance, it seems like a simple question.

But through the lens of African Market Psychology, it reveals an important lesson about brand positioning.

An umbrella serves more than one purpose.

It protects people from the rain.

It protects people from the sun.

A raincoat, however, is largely associated with one season.

The lesson for African founders is bigger than the products themselves.

Many brands position themselves like raincoats.

Customers remember them only when they have one specific problem.

The brands that become unforgettable position themselves like umbrellas.

They become useful across different moments, needs, and situations.

Business Insight 💡

The brands that win in African markets aren't always those with the widest product range.

They're the brands customers perceive as being useful in more moments of everyday life.

At AfriWrite Hub, we believe this is one of the reasons some African brands become part of community memory while others remain seasonal.

Perhaps the question isn't:

"How can my brand sell more?"

Perhaps it's:

"How can my brand become useful in more moments of my customer's life?"

What do you think?

Can you name an African brand that has successfully positioned itself like an umbrella rather than a raincoat?

👇 We'd love to hear your thoughts.

AfriWrite Wednesdays 🌍✍🏾

On Wednesdays, we do not whisper.

We remember. We reclaim. We write.

AfriWrite Wednesdays is where African stories breathe in full colour—unapologetic, rooted, and alive. It is a weekly ritual of words, where culture shapes creativity and storytelling becomes both mirror and drumbeat.

Here, brands find soul.

Creators find language.

Africa finds her voice—told by her own.

Beginning this Wednesday, expect narratives that challenge, reflections that ground, and stories that refuse to be diluted. Not trends. Not noise. Just intentional storytelling, guided by heritage and crafted with purpose.

If you believe stories are powerful.

If you know identity is a strategy.

If you write, build, or create with meaning—
Wednesdays belong to you.

Welcome to AfriWrite Wednesdays.

Where Africa writes herself.

African Monday Is Different
Monday in Africa doesn’t ask if you’re mentally ready.
It doesn’t check your mood.
It doesn’t care about your soft life playlist.
It just starts.
By 5am, someone is already sweeping.
By 6am, buses are arguing with traffic.
By 7am, someone has sold something, cooked something, carried something, or chased something.
In Africa, Monday doesn’t come with Monday blues.
It comes with responsibility.
We were raised in a place where tiredness is acknowledged… but not respected 😂
You can be tired, yes.
But the day must still move.
That’s why African resilience is loud without shouting.
It’s in the woman selling by the roadside.
The man opening his shop with faith and no guarantee.
The young person pressing the phone, laptop, dream, and destiny at the same time.
Monday in Africa is not motivational.
It’s practical.
And somehow, week after week, we still show up.
Still hope.
Still try again.
As the elders say:
“The sun does not wait for a lazy man to wake up.”
Happy Monday.
We move. 🌍 🪘
