The biggest reason many farmers remain poor is not because they don't work hard, it's because they only think about today's harvest.
After 4–5 years, a palm plantation starts producing, and you begin to enjoy the fruit of your labor for decades. Yet many of my Idoma people will never consider it because our minds have been programmed to focus mainly on cassava farming, just as our forefathers did.
I'm not saying stop planting cassava. Plant your cassava. Feed your family. Make your money.
But while you're planting for today, also plant for tomorrow.
The farmers who will be wealthy in the next 10 years are not the ones depending on one crop. They are the ones diversifying.
