Episode 4 — The Stranger
“I thought he was dead,” Mrs. Evelyn repeated.
Daniel stared at her.
“Mummy, who is he?”
She sat down quietly.
“His name is Michael.”
“Michael what?” Grace asked.
“Michael Okoro. He was your father's business partner.”
Uncle Samuel frowned.
“Business partner?”
Evelyn nodded.
“Yes. They ran a transport business together many years ago.”
Daniel looked at the photograph again.
“But why would Dad keep his picture hidden?”
Mrs. Evelyn sighed.
“Because they had a serious disagreement.”
“What kind of disagreement?” Grace asked.
Evelyn hesitated.
“I never knew the full details. Your father simply told me never to trust Michael again.”
Samuel picked up the black notebook.
“Then this may tell us what happened.”
He opened it.
The first few pages were blank.
Then he found an entry.
“Michael came again today. He says he wants what belongs to him.”
Daniel looked at his mother.
“What belongs to him?”
“I don't know,” she replied.
Samuel continued reading.
The next entry made everyone silent.
“If anything happens to me, Evelyn must never give Michael the documents.”
Grace's eyes widened.
“Documents? Which documents?”
Evelyn immediately stood up.
“There were some property documents your father kept.”
“Where are they?” Daniel asked.
“I don't know.”
Samuel looked at the wooden box.
“Maybe they're here.”
They searched through the box again.
Nothing.
Suddenly, Grace noticed something inside the old diary.
“Mummy, there's a loose page.”
She carefully pulled it out.
Written on it was an address.
Daniel read it aloud.
“Number 18, Oke Street.”
Samuel looked at Evelyn.
“Do you know that place?”
Evelyn's face went pale.
“Yes.”
“Whose house is it?”
She looked at Daniel.
“Michael's.”
Nobody spoke.
Then Daniel's phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
Unknown Number.
He answered.
“Hello?”
There was silence.
“Hello? Who is this?”
A man's voice finally came through.
“Daniel.”
Daniel froze.
“How do you know my name?”
The man chuckled softly.
“Because I knew your father.”
Daniel stood up.
“What do you want?”
The voice became serious.
“Tell your mother to stop searching.”
Daniel's heart began pounding.
“Who are you?”
The man paused.
Then he said,
“Ask your mother what really happened to your father.”
The call ended.
Daniel slowly lowered the phone.
Everyone was staring at him.
“What did he say?” Grace asked.
Daniel looked at his mother.
“He said we should stop searching.”
Mrs. Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.
Then she whispered,
“There is something I never told you about your father's death.”
