“Do grades matter?”

At an event called Beyond the Grades, we expected a no.

Osinachi Victor Nwandem said yes. Then he explained what a grade actually is.

Employers aren’t admiring your result. They’re looking for evidence to select from a large pile, fast. The grade is just the most convenient evidence they have.

“I have a lot of people that finished with a third class, but over time they have their law firms. They have a thriving business.”

“Grades are good, no doubt. But it is not an overall indicator. It is not even an indicator of how you will be in the next five years.”

A filter at one gate, at one moment. Never a forecast.

We asked a room full of law students and young lawyers whether a grade decides a career. Then we let people who had actually lived it answer.

A judge. A managing partner. In-house counsel. Different routes, not one of them straight.

“Over time, the grades fade out. What keeps you going is what you build on top of them.”

Some of these faces walked in carrying a result they were embarrassed about. Watching that shift during the sessions was the best part of the day.

Dear New Wigs and Young Lawyers

It's been 2 years since we launched our legal recruitment service at Strictly Law Business.

We have reviewed hundreds and hundreds of CVs and cover letters.

We have interviewed several lawyers across different cadres.

We have had conversations with lawyers seeking new opportunities.

One recurring theme has been about GRADES.

Young lawyers worried about the future of their legal career and how to navigate because of their grades.

In some interview sessions, we have had to pause and put on our coaching cap to help candidates see themselves better and more deserving.

Finishing with good grades is very important and guarantees access to better opportunities and even international scholarships.

Notwithstanding the above, grades are not the only determinant of success in life or in lawpractice.

In recent times, we have had to spend time counselling newwigs and helping them see possibilities beyond their grades.

This is why we have decided to host a free event to address this issue and hopefully shift mindsets and perspectives in a better direction.
