The best advertising, whether for a small business or large, is advertising that works. The price a small business owner pays for advertising would not be an issue if the outcome of the ad was known.

If a small business owner had a choice of paying $1000 a month for advertising that brought in a guarantee of at least $2000 a month profit, or paying $500 a month for advertising that brought in $750 worth of profit a month, there would be no hesitation. That savvy small business owner would gladly shell out $1000 each month for the advertising.

Small business advertising has no such guarantees however. It’s not like buying a refrigerator that is guaranteed to keep the milk and eggs cold. $1000 of advertising might bring $8000 of profit, or it might bring in zero. So, what’s a small business owner to do, especially if faced with a limited budget?

The best answer is to use small business advertising that only charges the owner when and if it works. There are several ways of doing this.

The primary method is called pay per click. This Internet option is available with numerous online merchant sites. Simply put, a small business agrees to pay a specified amount to the publisher, or the merchant site, for each ad that entices a consumer to come to the small business site. The price paid is generally an amount that the small business owner has bid on.

Advertising is not rocket science. You shouldn’t need a degree in the physical sciences to create or understand an ad.

Do you ever wonder why people read an ad or watch a commercial? The majority do so because they find them entertaining and informative. This is not to say that an ad should be created purely for entertainment purposes. A great ad is both entertaining and informative. The entertainment value should be derived from a feature of your product or brand. In other words, what you’re selling should be the star of the show. Sounds simple enough, but it is often hard to strike the right balance. That’s what makes advertising so fun.

How much information does your audience really need? What kind of story will they find entertaining? These are questions that should be asked and answered early on so that when you finally are presented with an ad or a campaign, you can judge the work according to these preordained guidelines.

A good campaign will reach your target audience and talk to them on a personal level. This has a valuable effect on your sales and reputation. A great advertising campaign will do more than that. It will create a buzz outside of your target audience.

Companies that think bigger become bigger. It’s a self-fulfilling cycle. If you just think like a local operation, you might miss the opportunity to expand regionally, nationally, or even internationally. Your advertising campaign should reflect the direction of your company—even if you’re not yet there.

Challenge yourself and your agency to think bigger.

We are bombarded with thousands of marketing messages daily. On television and the radio, on the internet, in magazines and newspapers, on billboards and other signs, and even at the bottoms and on the backs of receipts. The world is, indeed, a very noisy place. And in order to get heard, you need your marketing messages to be clear and concise.

A vague message is one that isn't easily understood - it doesn't speak to a potential customer or client. To be successful in business, your messages must clearly target a specific audience, explaining to them the features and benefits of your product or service. You need to get the public involved and interested enough to want to have further conversations with you. Only then do you have the entrée for beginning to develop a relationship with them, the first step in the selling process.

How can you ensure that your messages are all that they can be?

* Define your target market. One of the best ways to create a clear output is to start with clear inputs. When it comes to anything you do for your business, you need to be very clear on your target market. Who do you want to reach with your marketing efforts? Define them as clearly as possible. Are they male or female? What are their ages, their occupations, and their lifestyles? Why would they want to do business with you? The more clear you are about who you want to work with, the more clear you will be when crafting your marketing messages.

* Talk about the customer, not yourself. Your marketing message should speak to the prospect, their particular needs, and wants. What problems can you solve for the customer? you'd be passing up opportunities for more customers or clients. The reality is that more people will be attracted to you if you position yourself as a specialist rather than a generalist. Once you've gotten their attention you can market many things to them (delivery broadly) and charge a premium price.

* Talk about the customer, not yourself. Your marketing message should speak to the prospect, their particular needs and wants. What problems can you solve for the customer?

* Explain the benefits. Not only should you explain the benefits of your product or service, but you should be able to explain the benefits of working with you.

* Know your products and services. There is a lot to know when it comes to your products and services. The more articulate you are in explaining their features and benefits, the higher your chances of closing a sale.

* Keep it simple. The best messages are those that are simply said. People understand simple. The more complex the explanation, the higher the risk you run that you'll “lose them along the way.

* Use a tagline. A tagline is a slogan or phrase that conveys something about a feature or benefit of something you offer.

* Provide clear and clean information: This applies to everything from your business card to your website. Make sure you include your complete contact information on everything, including your email signature.

* Understand the customer. Prospects, and even your current customers, are focused on one thing and one thing only; what's in it for them. For the most part, they aren't really interested in you or your product or service. They are interested in benefits. How can you solve their pain? How can you resolve their issues? If you keep this in mind, this will help you to create marketing messages that are focused and really hit their mark.

Flyers are an excellent marketing tool.

You want your flyers to travel all over town, only you'd probably prefer it wasn't in the dustcart or stuck to the bottom of someone's shoe. What steps can you take to avoid this?

Here are a few hints and tricks to help your flyers avoid the trash:

1. Don't miss the boat before you start.

2. Make sure there's a reason for your target audience to keep your flyers. You Can include a promotion, discount, or special offer in the copy.

3. Always include the key facts. Your target audience needs to know what, when, why, how, and where. List all relevant info, such as prices, times, dates, venue or address, contact details, and your URL.

4. Always double check your spelling and grammar before you
go to print.

5. It may sound obvious but do a spot check on the reliability
of your delivery agents. You've got a great deal on print, don't blow it with the distribution.

6. Remember to leave your flyers in the places where your target audience hangs out, you can even meet them for some helpful placement ideas.

7. Strong visuals or topical humor help to remember
your promotion. They may even stick your flyer on their bedroom wall.

8. Ask a few people their opinion of your sample flyer designs to see which one has the most market appeal.

9. Want to increase sales and profit? Handing out the flyer
yourself can maximize your budget. Your personal enthusiasm and a friendly face can work wonders.

10. Put yourself in your audience's thoughts. Think the way they would and create a product that would solve their problem.

Er, Stand out and try not to stand near a bin😆😆😆

A flyer is an inexpensive and highly effective way to grab attention in a very busy marketplace. How do you make your flyer stand out in the crowd? Here are some techniques that professional designers use to make flyers "pop."

1. Write a snappy headline or title.

Make it memorable, unusual or provocative using a few carefully chosen powerful words. Popular titles contain one or more of these words: Easy, The Secrets to, Unlock, Finally, Insider, Time Sensitive, How to, Free Bonuses, Now You Can, Discover, Proven.

2. Use colorful or striking graphics.

One large image will have more impact than many smaller images. A stunning photo or illustration grabs attention, creates a mood, and supports your story. This image is your "focal point" and will draw your readers in.

3. Focus on the benefits of your product or service.

Your prospects will ask the question, "What's in it for me?" Write from their perspective using the words "you" and "your." Avoid using the following words: we, us, I and our. Be sure to keep your text short and to the point. Some of the most powerful words to use are: free, save, love, new, results, and guarantee.

4. Use compelling testimonials and case studies.

Nothing strikes a chord like an endorsement from a happy customer, especially if it demonstrates the results they've had with your product or service.

5. Organize your page with boxes, borders and areas of contrasting colors.

You don't need to fill your flyer with wall-to-wall text and graphics. Incorporate some white space to make certain elements stand out and to make the flyer easy to read.

6. Make your points easily identifiable.

Highlight titles and subtitles in bold, but avoid using ALL CAPS because they are more difficult to read.

7. Don't get too complicated.

Make it simple with two typefaces, and align items to a grid.

8. Don't forget to proofread.

Have someone else proofread your work.

9. If you are on a tight budget, try this.

Select bright colored or unique paper, and print with black ink.

10. Offer a discount or special limited-time price.

Design a coupon on the bottom quarter of the flyer. Be sure to clearly state the deadlines.
