I’ll contest 2027 presidential poll despite APC’s 30 governors – Peter Obi vows

Former Anambra State Governor, Mr Peter Obi has declared that he will contest the 2027 presidential election, and will not be intimidated by the large number of governors in All Progressives Congress, APC.

The former presidential candidate of Labour Party in 2023 said there have been several orchestrations meant to put him off the contest, but he will not be deterred.

Addressing his supporters in Njikoka, Anambra State, on Friday, Obi declared that Nigeria has collapsed totally and in need of redemption.

He said he has never been desperate to be President of Nigeria, rather he is desperate to see a Nigeria that works.

“Nigeria has collapsed and already lying on the ground. Nigeria is not working because many rich Nigerians are hungry and greedy. They have everything they need, but still scavenging for more.

“This is an empowerment programe, but you will be surprised that many well to do persons will come here to struggle for things they have no need for. Go to their compound you will see better vehicles than the ones they are struggling for.

“This country is skewed against the poor, and that is why we are working to become President. We want a country where the son of a nobody can become somebody without knowing anybody.

“I have always said it that I’m not desperate to be the President of Nigeria, but I’m desperate to see a Nigeria that works.

“You all know that I’m now in ADC. People have been asking me why I left LP, but I told them that we have been in court in Labour Party over leadership, and we have been securing favourable judgement, but INEC refused to recognize us, but when I left on 31 December, they recognized the same orders they were rejecting.

“You see all the things they have been tinkering with the constitution, some of them are because they don’t want me to contest. But I want to tell them that with their 30 governors, they should make the election free and fair and see who wins.

“I want to announce to you all that no matter what they do, I must contest the election. Let them declare a free and fair contest, bring the ball to the middle of the field and declare it started, and lets see what happens,” Obi said.

Power generation has degraded even more – National Grid

The National Grid has revealed that power generation across the 36 states in Nigeria has degraded even more.

The National Grid made this known on Friday morning through a post it shared on its official X account, reporting a sharp further drop in Nigeria’s power generation.

This thus continues a pattern of grid instability with at least three collapses earlier in the year, each reducing output to near-zero megawatts per data from the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO).

This degradation exacerbates Nigeria’s long-standing energy crisis, where despite vast gas reserves, transmission losses and underinvestment limit supply to under 5,000 MW for 200 million people, per recent reports from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), fueling demands for off-grid renewables.

A check on X also revealed that several areas across the nation have been in total blackout at least in the last 24 hours, disrupting daily life and economic activity.

Two of such areas are Odogunyan and Odonla in Ikorodu North Local Council District Area (LCDA), Ikorodu, Lagos where there has been no electricity since Thursday morning.

Nigeria electricity distribution companies (DisCos) received only 2,830 megawatts (MW) of electricity on Thursday as persistent gas shortages forced limitations across power plants, throwing most homes and industries into darkness.

However, Nigeria will add more than 200MW of solar electricity to its power system as the Federal Government moves ahead with over 1,000 mini-grid projects under a nationwide rural electrification programme.

Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), Abba Aliyu, disclosed in Abuja during a visit by the National Judicial Institute (NJI) that the projects form part of a $750 million public programme

Operational data from NISO showed that generation on the grid stood at 3,940.53MW about 05:00 hours on March 5, 2026.

Victory in 2027 election won’t be determined by governors – Aisha Yesufu

A social critic and activist, Aisha Yesufu, has said victory in 2027 will not be determined by the number of governors in a political party. She said the growing support for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is being fueled by the passion of Nigerians who want change in the country.

Yesufu made the remarks during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where she spoke about the current political atmosphere and the interest Nigerians are showing in the party.

According to her, the excitement surrounding the ADC shows that many Nigerians are eager to participate in a movement they believe can bring change.

“Nigerians are passionate, and we are going to do this by the grace of God,” she said.

Yesufu noted that political strength is not determined by the number of governors a party has, pointing out that such advantages have not always guaranteed electoral victory in Nigeria.

“President Tinubu has already lost 2027 presidential election and that’s why he’s putting together all the governors in Nigeria to have illusion of power

“Once upon a time, I think PDP had twenty-something governors. It didn’t stop them from losing the election when the time came,” she said.

She argued that what truly matters in politics is the support of the people.

She added that the level of interest shown in ADC activities reflects growing public enthusiasm.

“But you can see with the ADC the kind of excitement that it has garnered,” she stated.

The activist also described Nigeria’s current situation as troubling.

“Right now, Nigeria as a whole is a glitch. There is nothing working, whether economically or in terms of security,” Yesufu said.

She added that the country appears to be at a standstill, with many Nigerians worried about insecurity and the overall direction of governance.

“Nigeria is on standstill. There’s no governance and nothing is going on,” she said.

Yesufu, however, insisted that members of the ADC are ready to lead if given the opportunity and promised that they would pay attention to the concerns of citizens.

“There are people here who are saying we will listen, and yes, of course, we will always listen to Nigerians,” she said.

Responding to concerns that online political engagement may exclude people in rural areas, Yesufu dismissed the idea, saying most parts of the country now have access to communication networks.

“There’s no part in Nigeria where you don’t have network,” she said.

She explained that the party is also making provisions for people who may not have internet access by allowing them to register physically at the grassroots level.

“We also have physical forms at the wards. People can fill the forms and they will be uploaded from there,” she added.

Borno: Hundreds still missing after Boko Haram attack

Suspected Boko Haram terrorists have abducted more than 300 residents during a deadly attack on Ngoshe community in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State midnight on Wednesday, forcing thousands of survivors to flee to neigbouring Pulka community, where many have been forced to sleep on roads and in school buildings for fear of further attacks.

The PUNCH had earlier reported that suspected Boko Haram insurgents killed an unspecified number of civilians and abducted several women after launching an attack on a military post in the community.

Sources told our correspondent that the terrorists first stormed the military base in Ngoshe before unleashing violence on residents at about 1am on Wednesday.

Eyewitnesses said the assault lasted for several hours, leaving panic and destruction in its wake, before the air component of Operation Hadin Kai was deployed to repel the attackers and disperse them into the surrounding forest.

They added that the insurgents burnt several houses before retreating.

According to reports on Thursday, the Nigerian military also killed scores of the Boko Haram terrorists after their attack on the Ngoshe military base, which reportedly left nine soldiers dead.

Just in: DSS detains police, immigration officers over El-Rufai’s return to Nigeria

Five security officers, who attended to former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai at the Namdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on February 12, 2026, have been arrested for compromising their professional standards.

The five men, who are drawn from the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services, the Nigeria Immigration Service and Aviation Security, allegedly took bribes to grant the former governor entry into restricted security areas at the airport and, by so doing, obstructed security operations in what the DSS describes as an ‘unprecedented manner’.

Giving the details of the five men, a security official said Ayuba Yakubu, an assistant superintendent of police; Mutala Inuwa, a DSS operative; Najeeb Murtala, an assistant superintendent of immigration; and Musa Adamu and Salihu Victor, who are all from Aviation Security, AVSEC, all confessed to receiving bribes to facilitate the unauthorised entry into restricted areas at the NAIA on the date El-Rufai arrived from overseas.

The official statement from the security agency said on Tuesday: “At the end of a joint investigation by the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and the Federal Ministry of Aviation, five officers have been detained.

They are Ayuba Yakubu, Murtala Inuwa, Najeeb Murtala, Musa Adamu and Salihu Victor.

“They have all confessed to receiving bribes to facilitate unauthorised entry into restricted areas, to obstruct lawful security operations in an unprecedented manner.

“They have been handed over to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) for prosecution.

The statement, however, indicated that other officers from the NIS and NCS who did not take bribes but abused their uniforms to facilitate unauthorised access will still face administrative action.

‘We can win Lagos’ – PDP vows to rebuild party

The newly inaugurated Chairman of the Lagos State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Amos Fawole, has vowed to reposition the opposition party in the state, insisting that Lagos remains electorally attainable through unity, discipline and deliberate organisation.

Speaking at his inauguration in Lagos on Friday, Fawole said his assumption of office went beyond a routine leadership change, describing it as a collective pledge to restore confidence in opposition politics and re-energise residents with a people-focused alternative.

According to him, the occasion symbolised a turning point in the party’s determination to challenge what he described as years of political inertia and governance that has failed to meet the aspirations of Lagosians.
