This beautiful species of turaco lives on the east coast of Africa, and inhabits tropical moist lowland forests. It is often heard, giving its presence away by a series of loud growls.

Strigogyps dubius (extinct)

This unique species of extinct bird lived during the Eocene epoch of Europe (about 50 million years ago), and fossils have been found in France. This bird mostly resembled a modern-day seriema, having long legs with claws, a skull with (possible) a fairly large hooked beak, and quite small wings. Therefore, it is believed that it was flightless, and used its long legs for running. It is yet unclear if they were herbivorous and/or carnivorous.

Eleutherornis cotei (extinct)

Eleutherornis is so poorly known, that its exact placement within the family tree is uncertain. It's suggested that it might be closely related to ratites, terror birds or even the extinct sea birds, Pelagornithids. What they do know, is that they had long legs, so they were capable of running fast, like modern-day seriemas. Fossils have been found in France and Switzerland and dated back to about 50 million years ago, during the Eocene epoch.

Reindeer - Rangifer tarandus (extant)

Is it Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donder, Blitzen or is it Rudolph? The famous reindeer of Santa first appeared in literature in 1823! Particularly in Scandinavia, reindeer symbolise resourcefulness and knowledge. Also, they represented a safe journey while travelling through the snowy landscapes of the North.

I'd like to wish you all a Merry Christmas!
