With a simple “OK, Google”, Android users all over are accessing the internet in this new method, and many experts are predicting that almost 50% of all mobile searches will be undertaken utilising voice in this manner. It’s not just mobile users who are taking advantage of this new technology, however, with Microsoft integrating Cortana into Windows 10 and their Xbox One console. Amazon’s Echo device is another incredible tool that is like having your own personal database always at hand. The increase in voice assistants is also noting a dramatic increase in usage and is growing rapidly year upon year. With this in mind, it becomes essential to not only provide large amounts of content filled with keyword phrases but instead we have to understand that quality content comes with being specific and relevant. To rank higher in Google, content creators must now establish a reputation of authority on their subject, which can take time to build.

What the end goal should ideally be, is that users interested in your chosen genre perceive you to be a figure of authority in the subject area and attribute an element of trust in your content so much so that they begin to share it on other platforms, thus establishing your position as a source of good quality. Google will recognise this, and in time rank your content higher in related searched in this topic and drive up your page rank.

Progress in this area can be slow, but advancements can be made through partnering with other established bloggers and websites in related fields, thus providing you with a much-needed boost in the beginning.

While it doesn’t exist as a tool for answering questions and doesn’t provide links to sites that provide content, many online shoppers use Amazon as their primary search tool when finding products to purchase, and simply bypass Google’s search engine entirely. It has been estimated that around 72% of online shoppers prefer to use Amazon’s search function for locating products.

The nature of Amazon’s site also lends itself well to those looking to get real reviews on products, with all items having review sections where real customers can list their own set of pros and cons. This sort of feedback is seen as invaluable for customers and the best advice is often those who have real-world experience. While it may seem like a small thing, Google has certainly taken notice, and the knock-on effect Amazon’s rise could have on Google Ads could also be significant.

Because more shoppers are preferring to begin their product search on Amazon, the need for accurate branding and complete content strategy has never been higher if sellers are to be able to have their products stand out in the often-crowded Amazon marketplace. Keeping control of your products, and not allowing third-party resellers to diminish your brand name in terms of trust and quality is a constant battle.

In March 2018, Google began introducing its mobile-first indexing, and it is a change that many have predicted as mobile browsing now accounts for almost 60% of all internet traffic, and that figure is rising year upon year.

So, how exactly does this mobile-first indexing impact SEO and web design in general? Although the index is still in its infancy, it can be difficult to predict where it will lead, but what is apparent is that it prioritises speed as an important aspect on how well a site shall be placed. Last July, Google implemented its Speed Update and that highlighted just how imperative it is to build a site that is responsive, quick loading and fully functional on mobile devices.
