Khetalo

Khetalo We are a startup, blog and platform for farmers and producers. Khetalo is a seed, a small defiance to the status-quo. This is just a start.

Apart from advocating for organic and sustainable food production, we also provide technical assistance and support for growing, producing, selling and marketing your agro-products. Being a part of generation which were told that Nepal is an 'Agricultural Country' but witnessing, in practice the reluctancy of our society to work in food production and farming, we were brought to a realization tha

t much can be done if we start early, to revolutionize the traditional thinking linked with agriculture. The biodiversity of our country allows a wide range of ecosystems to flourish, but we haven't yet been able to devise effective scientific and political approach to harvest from the real potential of this gift. While we whine almost every time in our formal-informal chit-chats about how brain drain has washed this country's hues, how unreal it is for our resources to be left unused we often tend to ignore that that done can't be undone, yet future is for ours to make. We must not forget that as a function of our political history, the economic shift has played with our surrounding and nature as a whole. We barely care about where the food we eat from comes, how everything grows and what cost we have to pay on a collective level to bring our pies to our plates. The seed defies gravity and finds a way up to the surface before it meets sunlight. Our principle takes inspiration from these seeds that can grow despite the uncertainity they are bound to face. We aim to create value as we grow, just as the microbial ecosystem that covers the roots does as a seed burgeons into a mature plant, we want to interconnect people of various backgrounds into the services and products we provide. We believe that we should be able to provide a guidance to the succeeding generations to be as environmentally-friendly as we can, and hence respect the acts of growing own food, and more importantly be willing to grow on their own. There is no sure-shot answer as how or what we'll achieve, but we are starting with whatever knowledge, resources and networks we have. We aim to develop into a strong enterprise that gives back to the community. For that we'll need to wait and work and experiment and see.

is the best example of how perfectly biology works from the micro to macro level.

In an aquaponics system, the fish provide nutrients in the form of their "waste," or excrement. This waste contains nitrogen in the form of ammonia (too much of which can be toxic to fish), along with a variety of nutrients like phosphorus and potassium. Nitrifying bacteria that live in the gravel in the fish tank and on the tank walls convert the ammonia first into nitrites and then to nitrates which the plants can use. The water in the tank, which contains ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, phosphorus, potassium, and other micronutrients, is continuously pumped into a grow bed where the plants are located. The plants remove the nutrients from this water, and nitrifying bacteria in the grow bed (working together with the tank filter) clean the water by converting excess ammonia into nitrates, which plants use to grow. The clean water is then sent back into the fish tank. The grow bed and plants act as a biofilter, cleansing the water so that the fish remain healthy. In smaller, backyard aquaponics systems, the grow bed sits on top of the fish tank and the cleansed water from the grow bed drips back into the tank. In aquaponics, the fish, plants, and beneficial bacteria all depend on each other to live.

We celebrated by participating in a DIY competition themed 'Trash to Creation' organised by Social Aves We made a conceptual design for using household waste like plastic bottles to make a vertical garden.

The best part is we ended up winning the competition. The concept we demonstrated can be used for growing lettuce, spinach, mint and many other plants.

On , let's take a look on how growing our own plants will benefit us.

You will take control over your health and nutrition. Growing on your own means having an opportunity to raise healthy organic plants (and of course food).
