As much as I love being self employed, there's a real lonely side, too. Today I told my Mum that I really needed encouragement, because I felt so run down, overwhelmed, and quite frankly, didn't even know where to start with my day. And yes, it's a Sunday and I'm working. Why? Because while I'm pretty darn organised, not being in an office 9-5 can really throw my routine.

It's a two-sides of the same coin kind of scenario - there are huge benefits to creating your own schedule, and also huge challenges. Do you set a timer for your day? Do you use a work planning tool like Monday.com to help keep you on track? There are so many ways to do it, and it's about figuring out what works best for you.

I guess the point of this post is to remind my fellow self employed folk that it's so important to reach out to others if you're feeling like you need some extra encouragement. Even if it's having someone tell you 'YOU CAN DO IT!', or sitting next to each other to help keep your schedule in check. And remember, be proud of yourself for being self employed in the first place, because it's always a huge step to trust in yourself to be able to lead that kind of working lifestyle ❤️

I first met the lovely Helen at the Lyttelton Markets. She's an amazing clothes designer and seamstress, and she asked if I could help her create a basic business card that she could also use as a tag for her clothing.

It's sweet and simple and always a pleasure to run into her on a sunny Saturday doing her thing in style 💛

The quality of the relationships I have with my clients is at the heart of what I do. That's actually my professional background - working as an Account/Client Manager in different creative agencies.

This is because I LOVE people - I love connecting with others, understanding how best I can help them, and building on-going trust for a sustainable working relationship.

Here's a snap of me with Liz and her gorgeous cat, Harry. Liz runs her own successful Diamond Painting business from her home here in New Brighton. Each month, we meet up for a strategy session and together we talk through everything from the current global economy and how this reflects on her business, to marketing strategy, and of course, cuddles with Harry ❤️ 🐈‍⬛

With the permission granted from this lovely person to share, I wanted to put this out there. It's about the importance of sharing vulnerability with others, especially in the self employed space.

It can be really lonely - I truly miss working in an office with a team, and have learnt that by working 100% self employed at home by myself, I now know what I want my future career to look like - a balance of both.

I admire this person for reaching out to me, so I could share my feelings too, hopefully helping them feel that it is okay to have down days, and we can help by comforting and lifting each other up again ❤️

"But how can I REALLY know if my marketing efforts are working if I don't have a big budget?" This is something I hear quite often from small businesses (including thinking it myself!)

A smaller marketing budget often means it's a bit of a slow burn, and this is the tough truth! It will take time to see results, which can be hard to digest when all you're wanting to see is results, and you want to see them NOW! Trust me, I get it.

But it doesn't mean that nothing is working. It means that you have to be more intentional with where you allocate your marketing budget. It's about continuously observing and honing in on what is working for your business.

Over time, the slow burn can lead to real traction, where we often see the long-term value. So if you're feeling a bit down in the dumps and limited by your marketing spend, just trust that every little bit counts, and always be willing to learn and pivot towards what is working best for you! 🥰

I recently ran a workshop called 'Putting Yourself Out There as a Creative'. Included, was a challenge for attendees to write down one limiting belief they had about themselves and their creative profession.

It was really interesting when we shared our thoughts with each other, that we all shared very similar limited beliefs.

While these beliefs aren't constructive in themselves, what was comforting, was knowing that people weren't alone in their thoughts.

So therefore, we can challenge these shared thoughts together, we can hold each other accountable, better ourselves and others around us, and head towards sustained success together ❤️

Chris is a New Brighton local who runs his own Plumbing & Gas Fitting business.

He reached out to me wanting a brochure-style website; nothing too fancy, just something professional and easy to navigate.

We worked together to create his site through Rocketspark, and it’s now live!
