πŸ“ East End Cafe & Bar, Wairoa

If you're looking for a stop in Wairoa, this is it. Turn downstream at the roundabout, and you'll find it β€” off the main drag a bit, at the east end of Marine Parade, but so worth the detour.

Roomy spot with a big breakfast & lunch menu board β€” Eggs Benedict, chicken and beef burgers, cashew truffle hummus on ciabatta, the lot. But it's the cabinet that gets you: the hedgehog slice alone is cut generous enough to share, along with cranberry pistachio and lemon coconut slices lined up next to it.

Had a great yarn to Annabelle (2IC to owner Donna) while she poured the coffees. Ham, cheese and salad roll, corn fritters with chilli jam β€” both could easily hit the spot.

Some places deserve a mention. This is another one. East End Cafe & Bar is now on the Road Stops map β€” lynchcreative.nz/eastend-cafe-wairoa.

The Favor Flavour
Called into The Favor Flavour today, tucked away in the Richmond Centre on Egmont Street.
This place is a genuine family dream β€” Vishal and Rajeshni Chand had wanted to open a cafe together
since they moved to New Plymouth back in 2008. Rajeshni trained in culinary at WITT, Vishal brought
years in customer service, and between them they& #39;ve built something special.
Food looked beautiful β€” the cabinet& #39;s stacked with slices, muffins, samosas, even a chocolate cake that& #39;ll
test your willpower.
Coffee was great too.
If you& #39;re after something a bit different, they do proper Fijian Indo-Chinese β€” wok-tossed chicken, lamb,
chow mein, all made to order.
Worth the stop if you& #39;re in New Plymouth.

"This is Manna, in Edgecumbe β€” Ali and Garth's little slice of grace. Her cabinet is stacked with slices that don't hold back β€” rich, gooey, the kind you eat slowly because you don't want it to end. Add a coffee with a heart on top, and you've got a proper stop. But Ali does more than the counter too β€” wedding cakes for your big day, and a new space out back for high teas and functions. On weekends, it doubles as a gathering place for faith and community. Good coffee, good baking, good people."

Spoke to Michaela at Mamaku Blue earlier this afternoon. The team's flat out getting ready for Father's Day β€” they've got a special menu on, so make sure you've got a booking. She was heading off to grab the kids from school β€” one of her daily chores, balancing business and family life.

Up there on the Mamaku Plateau, less than 5 minutes off SH5, it's a cool spot worth the detour.

Call in, grab a coffee, hear a bit of the history of Mamaku, or take home a bottle of berry wine or a bag of frozen berries.

Big Jims Garden Cafe
πŸ“ Big Jim's Garden Cafe β€” 1217 Devon Road, Bell Block

Had a great chat with Sarah at Big Jim's Garden Cafe a couple of days ago, and it's easy to see why this place pulls a crowd. Straight off the main highway, tucked in alongside the garden centre, with plenty of outdoor seating under the trees and a playground for the kids β€” it's the kind of spot you can settle into for a while.

The team's getting organised for a big Father's Day this Sunday β€” so if you're after somewhere relaxed to treat Dad, get in early, or give the team a ring and book your spot.

Great cafe, great garden, great people.

πŸ“ Tio Ōhiwa β€” 111 Wainui Road, Ohope
"Had a chat with Simon at Tio Ohiwa Ohope on the phone this morning. They're busy harvesting oysters at the moment, keeping a close eye on the water quality to make sure it's all safe to eat. There's a Father's competition running too β€” oysters up for grabs β€” check their page to get in. Honestly, it's a great spot just to pull over and admire the view, grab a feed cooked up by the girls, or go straight for the raw seafood if that's more your speed. Worth checking out their boat tours as well. Tio Ohiwa Ohope is on the Road Stops map β€” lynchcreative.nz. Great Stops. Great Stories."

πŸ“ Shakee Pear CafΓ© β€” Taranaki Pioneer Village, Stratford

Stopped in yesterday on the way home. Caught the team behind the tinted windows watching me photograph the front β€” good sports, they struck one of their own behind the counter. Straight off the main road with plenty of parking, a big back room for functions, and a large outdoor area with a small playground for the kids. Looking at catering an off-site function? Give Jesse a call on 06 765 5235. I settled on the lime & avocado cheesecake to put the kitchen to the test β€” didn't disappoint, but plenty of other food options in the cabinet or check the menu out.

Quite often stop off in my travels at Cafe Norsewood β˜• β€” this time couldn't go past the apricot & almond cheesecake, worth the detour alone! The cabinet's stocked with fresh apple & rhubarb cake, walnut brittle, and afghans too. Great spot to grab an early coffee or lunch on your way through β€” Home of Fine Food, right in the heart of Norsewood. πŸ“

Called into Coffee on the MOOve in Bulls today. Open from 5:30am weekdays, 6:30am on weekends β€” that's dedication.

Had a yarn to Vee, who bought the place about six months back. He's making everything on site now, pies included. Spent 7 years working on a farm in Halcombe before he and his wife took this little shop on. You can tell β€” it's all done with care.

If you're heading through Bulls on SH1, stop off and support Vee and his wife.
