I've now received two emails from retail businesses I subscribe to that have asked if I'd prefer not to hear about Father's Day. This is an amazingly simple way to show manaakitanga to your audience.

As marketers and businesses, we are clamouring for attention in an oversaturated environment. Something as simple as empowering people to opt out of content that may be upsetting or uncomfortable for them shows gratitude and respect... and that matters.

I frequently have clients ask whether they should buy a camera to help with creating great social media content. My answer is always "no". If you've got money to spend, upgrade your phone.

Here's why:
1️⃣ Cameras on phones are just as good, if not better than a camera at the same price.
2️⃣ You ALWAYS have your phone on you. No more missing the perfect shot.
3️⃣ Save time and hassle transferring images off your camera.
4️⃣ Take advantage of great editing apps like Lightroom (or even the editing apps built into social media platforms)

Hi everyone, I’m Anna and I’m really pleased to have become a member of the Recon team.

Before the Covid pandemic I'd been working in wholesale travel but with impeccable timing I had my second boy just as the world was going into lockdown. My role soon vanished but I was more than happy to be home raising my boys for the next couple of years.

I’ve known Kat since we both had our oldest boys and met through Plunket. It was purely by chance I found out that Kat was looking for a bit of help with the day to day running of her business when I was thinking of finding some part time work so I got in touch and here we are today.

It’s been a steep learning curve for me, I’d not heard of SEO, Analytics or knew much about social media marketing before I started but I’m enjoying the challenge and learning lots.

I’m a big sports fan, I love watching rugby (go Crusaders!!) and cricket etc and I’m a big Formula 1 fan. I try to keep reasonably active and I’m working on my strength in my home gym when time allows it.

If you want to communicate with your audience, you need to be where they are. Creating a website or social media page or buying ad space on a billboard isn’t magically going to generate customers. Make sure you know who your audience is and start communicating with them where they are. That might be Facebook community groups, trade shows, specific shops or clubs.

Audience first – platforms second.

Kia ora koutou. I’m Ian, the Technologist at Recon Marketing. I’m an IT Professional with over 20 years experience. I’ve worked in the education, manufacturing, and technology sectors for organisations ranging in size from 30 to 100,000 employees, so I have broad exposure to technology, scale and ways of working.

I’m a problem solver. I like to look at a challenge, strip it back to basics and find the best solution whether that be through software, technology or suggesting a business process tweak for a smoother outcome.

I'm mostly in the background keeping the hamsters running in their wheels, whether that be setting up Microsoft 365 accounts, optimising email delivery, configuring domains and servers or managing databases.

Outside of work I’ve got two primary school aged kids that keep me busy with after school activities, board games and our family Minecraft world.
