Great brand design is more than just a logo and it doesn’t have to break the bank! An engaging brand will not only make your business more recognisable, but also more trusted and likely to be engaged with. If your messaging and design isn’t cohesive and consistent, you are missing out on an opportunity to get in front of your chosen audience and get in front of your competition. I find it best to

start with a cup of coffee and see where you’re at with your business, your purpose, and your brand. It’s a challenge out there in business at the moment. My business, my purpose, and my direction has certainly changed in the last five years. I have been in the business of graphic design for over 30 years across a number of industries. I have been involved in the corporate, agency, and print world. Working with companies from sole traders to thousands of employees. My passion lies in working ‘with’ companies, in particular SME’s, startups, and charities.

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐨 𝐰𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐭𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫? We can have a call to discuss your needs, or, if you’re in the Bay of Plenty area I am always available for a coffee catch up. No hard sell, just a chat about you and your business. I am also available to come into your business and run workshops to help you manage your marketing inhouse. I can audit your existing brand including your website and offer recommendations at no charge.

We don't normally post on the weekend but today is Web Designer Day and it couldn't be missed.

So, cheers to The Geek for building countless sites over the years and embracing every evolution of technology in the process.

Happy Web Designer Day to Jen's favourite one 🤓

📅 Today is Loomis Day.

Mahlon Loomis was a dentist who spent his spare time flying kites in the mountains of Virginia. He also accidentally invented wireless communication. He had no engineering degree. No funding. Just curiosity and a very long piece of copper wire.

He patented wireless telegraphy in 1872. Marconi gets all the glory. Loomis mostly gets a day in May.
I kinda like the idea of that. Just quietly doing your thing, long before anyone's paying attention.

In our business and life, much like everyone, wireless tech has become a necessity. So cheers, Mahlon. We owe you one.

Enjoy the long weekend, NZ.

Today is Geek Pride Day, and I refuse to let it pass without acknowledging The Geek himself.

Meet Dave, co-founder of Seed Studio, my husband, and the man who has been quietly making technology just work for over 30 years.

While I'm busy making things look good, Dave is in the background building the systems that hold it all together. In other words, I make s**t look pretty, he makes it work.

He's the calm to my chaos. The logic to my lack of. The one who explains something technical and somehow makes it make sense, he's a most patient teacher.

Auckland Museum, MOTAT, Auckland University, he's delivered for them all. Large-scale platforms, hosting, automation, data systems. If it involves code and a problem worth solving, he's in his element.

The nickname started with me. Now it seems to be sticking. He doesn't mind. There are worse things to be known for than being exceptionally, unapologetically good at what you do.

When he's not geeking, you'll find him on the river, chasing trout. A man of many talents.

📅 Happy Geek Pride Day! Seed wouldn't be what it is without you.

A massive thank you to Anjali Kay - This Splendid Shambles for a fun and practical session this morning about blogging. So many ideas are now forming, and it was just the kick in the you-know-what to blow the cobwebs off our blog section.

What should we write about first?

Shout out to the always amazing team at She Is Unleashed - Women In Business for bringing these resources to us.

When The Geek and I moved to the BOP four years ago, we never imagined we'd find this kind of community.

We live in a little town with a huge heart, and we were thrilled to be trusted with building a new online platform for the whole area.

This project has been a true collaboration. I sit on the local events board and have been able to volunteer my design services, not just for the rebrand, but for event promotions and design refreshes along the way.

This is the stuff we love. Being able to make a real contribution to the place we call home, and do great work while we're at it.

📅 Today is also End of the World Anniversary. We're still here. The website launched. Coincidence? Probably.

There's a meaning behind Seed Studio's name.

A seed is the beginning of something. The quiet before growth. The moment before the brand is built or renovated, the website launched, the business out in the world doing what it was made to do.

The colours we chose came from the same place. Forests and water. My relationship with the bush, Dave's (and Lexi's) with the water. Two different expressions of the same thing: being rooted in something real.

We didn't design our brand to look like a design studio. We designed it to look like us.

That's what we try to do for every client. Not create the most impressive-looking version of their business, but the most honest one. The one that feels like it belongs, because it actually does.

🗓 Today is Plant Something Day. A thought, a brand, a business, a future.

This is Eddie.

Eddie mows the lawns. Nobody asks him to. Nobody reminds him. He just goes, does the job, and returns to his little house when he's done.

Eddie is automation. He's the clearest example of what a well-set-up system looks like in practice. The task is repetitive, predictable, and time-consuming. It runs without us.

That's all automation is. The right tools doing the boring bits so you can do the parts that actually need you. In our case, we get more of our weekend, and Eddie is happy to mow the lawns in the rain.

For most small businesses, automation looks like: enquiry comes in, response goes out, details land somewhere useful, follow-up reminder appears three days later. You're still in the loop. You're just not doing it by hand every single time.

Eddie's got the lawns. We can sort the rest.

Happy Friday. Go outside. The admin can wait, or better yet, set it up so it runs itself.

📅 Today is Bring Someone Flowers Day. Eddie can't do that, The Geek is still on flowers duty 💐

There's a communication problem.

Your website and your other business tools should be talking to each other.

Most of the time, they're not.

A booking system that doesn't sync with your calendar. A contact form that doesn't connect with your CRM. An invoicing tool that lives entirely separately from your website enquiries. They work on their own but they're not working together.

For trade and service businesses, this means time away from what you do best. Enquiries that need to be manually entered somewhere else. Follow-ups that get missed because nothing triggered a reminder. Admin time that could have been automated, but wasn't.

It's not all about looks. When we build a website, we look at the whole picture, not just the site, but how it connects with the tools you already use. A well-integrated setup doesn't just look better. It runs better. And it gives you back time you didn't know you were losing.
