Have you ever wondered why a printing service can't just print something on the spot, even when it seems like it should be a quick task? 🤔 ⏳

It's a common misconception, but there’s a lot more behind the scenes than meets the eye. When you work in a print shop, you're juggling multiple orders, tight deadlines, and complex processes all at once. A seemingly simple task can easily disrupt workflows that are already packed with other projects, each requiring specific attention, preparation, and setup. From understanding the job at hand, setting up the machine to the right specifications and then overseeing the quality control, each job involves more than just hitting 'print.' Adding in last-minute requests can throw off the entire schedule, causing delays and impacting other clients.

It’s not about being unwilling – we may look quiet when you walk in the store and we don't have a crowd of people milling around, but behind the scenes we probably have half a dozen jobs on the go and a lot more unread emails waiting to be seen and responded to.

So next time you just need a 'quick print' keep in mind the care and time that goes into every project. We appreciate your patience!

Resolution Issues 📷

Ever had that moment where your image looks sharp on screen, but when you print it, it turns into a pixelated mess?

Let's take a look at the burger example below:

🍔 Burger on the Left – 2MB, 300dpi (mouth-watering)
🍔 Burger on the Right – 23KB, 60dpi (sad, blurry mess)

Same size, but one’s ready for the big screen, the other is doomed to print disappointment.

How to avoid this:

👉 Aim for top-tier image quality. That 10KB logo that looks “fine” on your screen? Not so fine in print.
👉 Web images? Cute for the internet, not so much for print. They’ve been compressed to death.
👉 Always check your resolution (300dpi is your friend).
👉 Double-check that PDF is set to ‘High Quality Print’. Don't settle for ‘Standard’—the text will look sharp, the images not so much.

Pro Tip: Zoom in to 100% when reviewing PDFs. If it's pixelated on-screen, it’ll be pixelated on paper.

Let’s ensure your designs come to life in print just as sharp as they appear on screen!

Printing mistakes can be time consuming and cost you money. In our latest blog post we talk about the 5 mistakes people make when it comes to printing and provide some tips to help you avoid them.

The first thing on our list - Ignoring File Set Up.

One of the most common issues we come across is receiving a file that isn’t set for size! It may seem obvious that you can't fit a square peg in a round hole but you'd be amazed the number of times we're given a square design and asked to make it into a DLE flier.

Here are some other tips to help you avoid file issues:
👉 Ensure your design is the correct size.
👉Make sure you have included crops and bleeds on your design.
👉Don’t have text or images too close to the edge of the page so they don’t get cut off.
👉Convert your files to a PDF and make sure you choose the highest quality option.

Crops and bleeds are key concepts in print design to ensure that printed materials look polished and professional. But when we request them of our clients we're often met with a lack of understanding as to what crops and bleeds actually are.

So what do we mean exactly when we say you need to provide your file with crops and bleeds?

👉 Bleed refers to the area of a design that extends beyond the final trim size of the document. It ensures that when the document is trimmed to its final size, there are no unprinted edges or white borders.

👉 Crop Marks are lines printed in the corners of a document to indicate where it should be trimmed to reach its final size.

To find out more, you can read our full blog post https://www.riegers.co.nz/what-are-crops-and-bleeds which outlines the purpose of crops and bleeds and how they work to give you a perfect edge to edge print.
