The concept of the island economy must be based on the fundamentals of vibrant economic reliability, self-sufficiency, and a strong agriculture driven.
A mindset of cash circulation between locally owned enterprises must be developed and practice to promote the local economy.
Money leaks from the cycle when we purchase from foreign own firms. That kina leaves the shores of the island.
Our economy must produce surplus so it can inject more Kina into our kina cycle.

3. Clothing

5. Etc..
A strong economy is based on sustainability. Working on the land. As land renews itself using it's natural processes it gives blessing to people who love it.

Karkar Island Local Economy Concept is pleased with the Karkar Island Community, The Organising Committee, and the General Public for the collective effect towards the Most Successful Karkar Island Bilum Festival Hosted for three days, Thursday October 24 to Saturday October 26.

The KILEC is pleased also to perform humbly by stating here some of the benefit the festival brought about for local people.

1. Revenue
A. Bilum
The sale of bilum has raised revenue for local mother who put their efforts in weaving bilums for this big event. They were rewarded accordingly.

B. Betel-nut/lime/mustard
Most people who sell betel-nuts plus those selling its compliments have collected big amounts during those days.

C. Refreshments
Those who sells refreshments like kulau, ice block, mumu and others like protein have benefited in monetary value.

Such annual events are vital for its spin-off for local economy. Local economy must take the opportunity to net huge kina to help promote its stanards.
Local people must invest in education and health for an healthy island.

Our people must have a culture of saving and investing their resources.
Karkar is an island. We are isolated from our friends on the mainland. We must learn to localize our economy for the benefit of our the island.
There must be more injections into our local economy than leakages. Make more investments which will bring in more money into our local economy.

Our people must save and do more investments..

Such festival will bring in more money making opportunities for the local economy..
Lets promote our culture by preserving, exercising, saving and investing, conserving for future generations.

One might think that the market of mustard(daka-pidgin/bega-waskia/ful-takia) is not as he or she thought.
That morning I caught up with this group of mothers from Kevasob village with their marketing bags full of mustard. They were waiting patiently for their favorite driver Mr Belong Amet for pickup. It will cost them K7 from Mangar to Kulili for them to sell their products.

Asking them how much they earn in a week I was quite convinced they earn between K150 to K250 in a week.

It's a daily income. They told me that they understand how hard life is on island. This is what one of them told me. " We people from Kevasob don't normally let our money go out of the community."

Thats my idea.

Australian tourists recently visited one of the Australian owned plantation on the island. The locals from Kuburne village welcomed them with traditional Dance. Locals also displayed the unique Karkar bilum for tourists to view.
Tourism is an invisible export. It is an injection to the circular flow of income. It adds money into the circular flow thus boost our economy as more tourists from outside visits our island.

So how can Karkar people benefit from tourism industry?

Listed are few tips:

1. Promote Healthy island concept
2. Preserve and conserve our culture, especially traditional dance.
3. A well-plan and ex*****on of so called Karkar Bilum Festival, which I believe is a national function and an initiative of the PNG TPA (Tourism Promotion Authority)
4. A condition road network
5. A crime free island
6. Building standard guest houses
7. Plan of regular attraction events and advertise it.

Only few tips that can assist to promote tourism industry for our benefit.
