PNG MUSIC LEGEND DANIEL BILIP REMEMBERED ON FIRST ANNIVERSARY

AVI BLOCK | OCTOBER 10, 2026

Family members, fellow musicians and friends gathered at Avi Block today to commemorate the first anniversary of the passing of celebrated Papua New Guinean music legend, Late Daniel Bilip.

His wife, children, extended family, members of his stage band and close friends attended the emotional memorial gathering. Two of his childhood friends flew all the way from Wanimo, West Sepik Province, to join the family and pay their respects.

The five 2024 Justin Kili Awards presented to Daniel Bilip after his passing were proudly displayed during the gathering. Those present remembered the heartbreaking moment when his name was called on stage, but he was no longer there to receive the awards. The stage fell silent as the reality of his absence touched everyone.

Family members and friends shed tears, laid flowers and said another painful goodbye to their beloved husband, father, relative, childhood friend and fellow musician.

Although one year has passed, Daniel Bilip’s voice, music and contribution to Papua New Guinea’s music industry remain alive. His songs continue to inspire fellow artists and music lovers across the country.

Rest peacefully, Late Daniel Bilip. Your music has fallen silent on the stage, but it will continue to sing in the hearts of your people forever. 🕊️🌹🎶

CUSTOMARY COMPENSATION AND RECONCILIATION

About four months ago, a tragic road accident occurred at Epolga Service Station. A woman over 60 years of age from the Jika Paralgamb tribe was struck by a vehicle while crossing the road and sadly lost her life. The vehicle owner is from Kusumb.

In keeping with Melanesian customs, the vehicle owner and the people of Poika-Kalapuka 15 Council offered their sincere apology and presented customary compensation to the Jika Paralgamb people and the deceased woman’s family. The compensation included a total of 49 pigs and more than K80,000 in cash at Pinza Place Singsing, Upper Nebilyer, Tambul–Nebilyer District, Western Highlands Province.

The relatives of the deceased woman expressed their appreciation and formally accepted the apology and compensation presentation as a step towards reconciliation and peace between both sides.

Meanwhile, the owner of the Coaster bus, Manuel Kewa, called on the Peace and Good Order Committee to take note of such compensation cases and consider establishing a standard compensation limit. He said that because many individuals now own vehicles, a clear and consistent standard is needed.

Mr. Kewa urged the Peace and Good Order Committee to take this proposal to the Provincial Executive Council members for consideration and to establish an official compensation cut-off limit.

Although compensation cannot replace a precious life, the ceremony represented remorse, respect, reconciliation and the restoration of peace between the Kusumb and Jika Paralgamb communities.

May her soul rest in eternal peace.

A HISTORIC MOMENT FOR THE MOKE AKELKA COMMUNITY

This was a truly historic moment as the Moke Akelka community gathered for reconciliation and thanksgiving.

The people humbly sought forgiveness for the wrongs committed by their ancestors and committed themselves to a new path of peace, faith and unity.

His Grace Archbishop Clement Papa, PhD, of the Catholic Archdiocese of Mt. Hagen, gave the thanksgiving blessing. He also blessed tree seedlings and presented one to each community to plant as a living symbol of reconciliation and the beginning of a new era.

During the closing ceremony, candles were lit and handed to the next host community. This symbolises the light of faith travelling from community to community—from the mountains to the valleys—so that it will continue to shine for generations to come.

May this historic reconciliation heal the wounds of the past and bring lasting peace, unity and blessings to every community. 🙏🏽🕯️🌱
