Four years ago in Morobe Province, a newborn baby boy was abandoned shortly after birth. A pink napkin had been tied around his neck in an attempt to stop him from breathing.
It also appeared that he had been struck several times to silence him forever. But fate had other plans for this little boy.
No one knows how long he lay hidden beneath the tall kunai grasses near the Nazab area.
Around midday, his faint cries finally pierced the silence. At that very moment, an elderly woman from the Highlands was walking along the Okuk Highway toward the Nazab International Airport junction to catch a PMV bus.
At first, she thought the sound was coming from far away. But the cries continued β the unmistakable cries of a newborn baby.
She stopped and listened carefully, realizing the sound was coming from the other side of the highway. Without hesitation, she crossed the road and searched through the thick kunai grass. About four or five meters from the roadside, she discovered the helpless baby lying alone. There were no footprints leading to him, making it obvious that he had been thrown into the bushes from the road.
The woman quickly pushed through the tall grass, picked up the naked baby β with only the pink napkin still hanging around his neck β and rushed him home. It is believed that black ants biting him may have awakened him from unconsciousness, causing him to cry out for help.
That cry saved his life.
Today, the Highlands woman lovingly raises the little boy as her own son. After losing her husband and carrying deep sorrow in her heart, this child became a shining light in her life. His smile brings her comfort, joy, and renewed purpose every single day.
One mother rejected him before he even had a chance to live, but another mother embraced him with unconditional love and gave him a future.
This story reminds us that even in the darkest moments, hope can still be found. Sometimes, the people who are not connected to us by blood become the very ones who save our lives and love us the most. β€οΈ
