The Cook Islands has officially welcomed Jetstar’s inaugural direct flight from Brisbane to Rarotonga, marking another exciting milestone in strengthening tourism, connectivity, and cultural ties between Australia and the Cook Islands.

The new service, operating three times weekly, opens an important gateway from Queensland and further strengthens access for Australian visitors, returning Cook Islanders, and diaspora travelling home. Passengers arriving on the historic first flight were greeted at Rarotonga International Airport with traditional drumming, cultural performances, and the warm island hospitality, the Cook Islands is known for.

Prime Minister Hon. Mark Brown described the launch as another important step forward for the nation’s tourism sector and wider economy.

“Jetstar’s Sydney services have already delivered significant benefits for the Cook Islands, and three weekly flights from Brisbane further strengthens accessibility for both Australian visitors and our Cook Islands diaspora travelling home,” Prime Minister Brown said.

Australia continues to emerge as a key growth market for the Cook Islands, with visitor arrivals forecast to reach approximately 55,000 in 2026 — representing 28 per cent of total visitor arrivals, compared with around 29,000 visitors in 2019.

Cook Islands Tourism Corporation Chief Executive Officer Karla Eggelton said Brisbane was strategically selected as Jetstar’s second Australian gateway to support the continued growth of the Australian market.

The United States of America has announced USD$30 million to support satellite internet connectivity in Papua New Guinea.

The support, announced following the second US-PNG Strategic Partnership Dialogue, is intended to connect remote health facilities, schools, and disaster centers, and expand access to education, healthcare, economic opportunities, and global markets.

Frontline service priority areas include:
- Schools
- Health posts and rural health facilities
- District Development Authority offices
- Provincial Health Authority offices
- Disaster response centers
- Targeted Special Economic Zones
- Rural-based communities without reliable connectivity

The government is keen to continue working jointly with the United States government and Starlink during the deployment phase to ensure implementation is properly coordinated with national priorities, regulatory requirements, and service delivery needs, according to Hon. Peter Tsiamalili, Minister for Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

“Satellite connectivity solutions, both direct-to-consumer and enterprise (Starlink Community Hub), will complement, not replace, existing mobile, fiber, and other telecommunications infrastructure.”

“The focus is to use the right technology in the right place to connect the people.”

New Zealand’s continued support for Fiji’s climate relocation programme is helping vulnerable communities move from uncertainty to security as they face the growing impacts of climate change.

Speaking during a courtesy visit today (26:05:2026) by New Zealand High Commissioner to Fiji, His Excellency Greg Andrews, Minister for Information, Environment and Climate Change Hon. Lynda Tabuya highlighted the importance of New Zealand’s partnership in advancing Fiji’s climate resilience efforts.

The Minister acknowledged New Zealand’s $6.5 million contribution to the Climate Relocation of Communities (CROC) Trust Fund to support the relocation of vulnerable communities such as Nabavatu.

Reflecting on her recent trip to the North, Hon. Tabuya said families currently living in temporary shelters were looking forward to moving into permanent homes as construction progresses, with the project expected to be completed in October.

The High Commissioner said New Zealand was proud to support Fiji’s relocation initiatives, describing the programme as globally significant and an example of practical climate action in the Pacific.

Discussions also focused on preparations for upcoming PRE-COP and COP engagements, with both sides reaffirming support for Pacific priorities including climate finance, adaptation, loss and damage, and limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
The Minister called for continued cooperation to strengthen Fiji’s access to climate finance and support locally led adaptation and resilience projects across vulnerable communities.

The meeting also covered Fiji’s efforts to address misinformation and online safety, with the Minister outlining ongoing work on a national framework to tackle misinformation and disinformation ahead of future elections. New Zealand’s experience in dealing with misinformation following the Christchurch terror attack and during the COVID-19 pandemic was shared, noting that online misinformation had become a growing challenge for governments globally.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation under the Fiji-New Zealand Duavata Partnership 2026–2030 across climate action, resilience, governance and information management.

United States and Solomon Islands signed investment incentive agreement to unlock new strategic development opportunities. U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Dan O’Hara and Solomon Islands Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Rick Houenipwela, signed this agreement in Honiara.

This landmark agreement opens the door to new private sector-led transactions that can help transform Solomon Islands’ economy, improve the lives of its people, and strengthen U.S. economic engagement in the Pacific.

Chargé d’Affaires Dan O’Hara said, “This agreement is about creating real opportunities for Solomon Islanders and Americans—the potential for more jobs, improved infrastructure, greater connectivity, and sustainable economic growth.

In Solomon Islands, there are significant needs and opportunities in infrastructure, information and communications technology connectivity, and energy.

Papua New Guinea and France have signed the Shiprider Agreement to deepen cooperation on security and defence.

PNG Foreign Minister Hon. Justin Tkatchenko and French Foreign Minister Jean-Louis Barrot signed the deal during Prime Minister Hon. James Marape’s visit to Paris last week.

The agreement builds on the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) signed four years ago. It strengthens joint efforts on maritime security, targeting illegal fishing and drug trafficking in PNG waters.

A French spokesperson said the deal complements existing cooperation and addresses shared security challenges in the Pacific.

A 14-tonne shipment of premium cocoa beans from Maprik District, East Sepik Province, has been exported to New Zealand for trial production, coordinated by the Bumbita Community Development Association and New Zealand importer Rautini Limited, according to NBC East Sepik.

PNG cocoa will be tested by three chocolate makers in Wellington. Bumbita has also been invited to sign a Memorandum of Understanding later this week to establish a long-term commercial framework for cocoa trade.

Rautini Limited intends to distribute Bumbita cocoa beans to approximately 40 processors across New Zealand.

The people of West Maprik have remained resilient cocoa farmers for many years, contributing significantly to the local agricultural economy. This year’s East Sepik Cocoa Expo showcased the quality and potential of Maprik cocoa to international buyers, particularly in New Zealand.

This breakthrough reflects a dual commitment: advancing PNG’s international trade diplomacy while creating economic opportunities for local cocoa farmers.

The United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday adopted a resolution reinforcing countries’ obligations to combat climate change, though the text was weakened under pressure from major greenhouse gas emitters.

The vote was 141 votes in favor and only eight against – uniting the United States, Russia and Iran which are all major gas and oil exporters and sought to strike down the initiative.

The General Assembly, driven by the Pacific island nation of Vanuatu, previously asked the International Court of Justice for an advisory opinion on states' responsibility to honor their climate commitments.

The opinion issued last summer exceeded the expectations of climate advocates, with the court ruling it was "unlawful" for countries to neglect their climate commitments, opening the door to "reparations" for affected countries.

"The states and peoples bearing the heaviest burden are very often those who contributed least to the problem," said Vanuatu's ambassador to the UN, Odo Tevi, ahead of the vote.

"We are aware that some would prefer this assembly to say less or nothing at all...the harm is real, and it is already here."
