Miss Elevala Lahara, Mary Ruth Kua, was crowned the 2026 Hiri Hanenamo today following her outstanding display of cultural knowledge, grace and traditional authenticity at the 2026 Hiri Moale Festival in Port Moresby.
The Motu Koita Assembly Chairman Hon. Russell Simon Wavik congratulated Miss Kua on her historic crowning, saying her performance reflected the cultural traditions and heritage of the Motu Koitabu people.
Mr Wavik also congratulated the two runners-up who competed alongside Miss Kua.
Miss Kira Kira Hanenamo, Judith Julie Gadiki, was named first runner-up, while Miss Araira, Cheryl Soilen, was named second runner-up.
Chairman Wavik also acknowledged all Hanenamo contestants who represented their respective villages and contributed to the preservation of Motu Koitabu customs and traditions.
He said the contestants’ commitment to traditional practices, including cultural tattoos and traditional attire, would help keep the heritage alive for future generations.
Mr Wavik thanked the Hiri Moale Festival Committee, traditional elders, corporate sponsors, security personnel, community members and visitors who contributed to the successful staging of the festival.
The collective support, he said, helped deliver a peaceful celebration and showcase of Motu Koitabu culture and identity.
