The Commission on Higher Education International Affairs Service (CHED IAS) joins the entire nation in celebrating the National Higher Education Day and CHED Founding Anniversary!

Enacted under Republic Act No. 11522, National Higher Education Day is celebrated every May 18 to commemorate the official founding of CHED in 1994 through Republic Act No. 7722, also known as the Higher Education Act of 1994. This historic transition separated tertiary education from the broader Department of Education, Culture, and Sports, creating a dedicated governing body to steer the higher education system of the country toward growth, academic freedom, and structural excellence.

Over the last three decades, this milestone has served as an annual reminder of our collective pursuit of accessible, quality education for every Filipino.

Today, we continue to champion the brilliance of Filipino students, educators, staff, and Higher Education Institutions as we elevate Philippine higher education onto the global stage.

Through strategic international partnerships, transnational education, and global academic collaborations, we remain steadfast in our commitment to fostering a globally competitive and inclusive future for all.

Pursuant to the enactment of Republic Act No. 12178, otherwise known as the National Education Support Personnel Day Act, the Commission on Higher Education International Affairs Service (CHED IAS) joins the Philippine higher education sector in celebrating the invaluable contributions of administrative, technical, and support staff across the nation. Signed into law on April 15, 2025, RA 12178 officially declares May 16 of every year as a Special Working Holiday dedicated to honoring non teaching and teaching related personnel.

This national legislation traces its roots to global advocacy, having been institutionalized in explicit recognition of World Education Support Personnel Day. This is an international movement championed by global education coalitions to highlight the unsung heroes of the academic ecosystem. Recognizing that academic quality relies heavily on the administrative foundation built behind the scenes, the Philippine government consolidated Senate Bill No. 2872 and House Bill No. 4896 to grant the support sector its permanent day of national gratitude.

For the CHED IAS, this celebration directly underscores the core drivers of internationalization. The success of global student and faculty mobility, the processing of international transnational agreements, and the meticulous document lifecycle management required for global institutional rankings are all powered by administrative and technical professionals. Through this announcement, the Commission expresses its deepest gratitude to the registrars, liaison officers, technical assistants, and administrative staff who serve as the vital backbone pushing Philippine higher education onto the global stage.

The Commission on Higher Education International Affairs Service (CHED IAS) celebrates the International Day of Light every May 16 to highlight the vital role light-based technologies play in science, culture, and sustainable development. For academic institutions, this day emphasizes the importance of innovation and the continued advancement of optical technologies that drive modern communication, medicine, and clean energy. Through internationalization, we aim to illuminate new pathways for research and collaboration that empower the next generation of Filipino scientists and global leaders.

This global observance marks the anniversary of the first successful operation of the laser in 1960 by physicist and engineer Theodore Maiman. Following a highly successful International Year of Light in 2015, UNESCO officially established this annual celebration to promote the continued appreciation of how light science contributes to the goals of education and peace. It serves as a reminder that the study of light is a bridge between different scientific disciplines and a catalyst for cross-border cooperation in solving global challenges.
