Senator of the Republic of the Philippines Hon. Paolo Benigno "Bam" Aquino IV arrives at Eastern Samar State University Main Campus as the speaker of ESSU's 63rd Commencement Exercises on Friday, May 15, 2026.

Sen. Aquino is set to deliver his message to more than 2,000 graduating ESSUdyantes.

Other local officials are also expexted to grace the ceremony and deliver their congratulatory messages to the graduates, including 4Ps Partylist Representative and House Minority Leader Cong. Marcelino "Nonoy" Libanan, Tingog Partylist Representative and Committee on Higher And Technical Education Chairman Cong. Jude Acidre, Eastern Samar Lone District Representativr Cong. Christopher "Sheen" Gonzales, Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Commissioner Desiderio Apag III, CHED Region VIII Director Maximo Aljibe, CESO III, Eastern Samar Governor Ralph Vincent "RV" Evardone and Borongan City Mayor Jose Ivan Dayan Agda.

Maypangdan, Borongan City, ahead of the 63rd Commencement Exercises at Eastern Samar State University Main Campus on Friday, May 15, 2026.

Police, traffic officers, and university security personnel are currently in place to manage the buildup as thousands of attendees continue to arrive.

๐—›๐—”๐—ฃ๐—ฃ๐—˜๐—ก๐—œ๐—ก๐—š ๐—ก๐—ข๐—ช: Last minute preparations are underway for Eastern Samar State University Main Campus' 63rd Commencement Exercises at the University Grandstand today, Friday, May 15, 2026.

More than 2,000 ESSUdyantes, along with their families, are expected to attend the ceremony, marking the culmination of their academic journey.

Senator Paolo Benigno "Bam" Aquino IV is also expected to arrive shortly as this year's commencement speaker.

โ€ŽEastern Samar State University (ESSU)-Main Campus in Borongan once again made its mark in the March 2026 Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) with a graduate securing a spot among the topnotchers nationwide, based on results released by the Professional Regulation Commission on Tuesday, May 12, 2026.

โ€ŽESSU graduate Mariane Lochim landed fifth among the topnotchers with a rating of 93.80%
โ€Ž
โ€ŽIn the elementary level, the university posted a 74.47 percent passing rate, with 35 out of 47 examinees successfully passing the board examination.
โ€Ž
โ€ŽMeanwhile, in the secondary level, ESSU recorded a passing rate of 80.00%, as 60 out of 75 examinees earned their professional licenses.
โ€Ž
โ€ŽNationwide, this yearโ€™s LET recorded the highest passing rate in history of 67.17%, with 63,377 out of 94,357 examinees passing the licensure examination.

In a country grappling with threats to press freedom, choosing to write even when hands tremble and to speak in spaces where voices are silenced is more than a burden journalists must carry, it is a shared responsibility we must all uphold. For truth should never remain hidden.

Stories like that of Frenchie Mae Cumpio, a community journalist known for her critical reporting on human rights, remind us of the risks that come with speaking truth to power. Arrested in 2020 on terrorism-related charges, her case reflects how labels can become tools of suppression, direct and unjust attacks on journalists whose work centers on the marginalized and the oppressed. This reality weighs even heavier on young individuals who aspire to enter the field with courage and conviction.

The press is not something to be feared or branded as anti-people. It is a vital institution that must be protected and uplifted, for it carries the voices of the unheard and preserves the truth for generations to come.

Today, on World Press Freedom Day, The Catalyst joins in raising awareness on the importance of press freedom as a cornerstone of democracy. Let this be a reminder that defending the press is, ultimately, defending the people.
