In the Philippinesโa nation where over 80% of the population identifies as Catholic โthe question of political loyalty versus religious faith has rarely been as sharply defined as during the presidency of Rodrigo Duterte. While many Filipinos saw him as a strong leader who brought order, his own public statements, policies, and open rejection of core Catholic teachings raise a fundamental moral conflict: can one sincerely embrace the Catholic faith while fully supporting a leader who repeatedly attacks its doctrines, mocks its beliefs, and promotes actions directly opposed to its moral principles?
This article examines this tension directly through Duterteโs own words and actions, contrasting them with what it means to be a practicing, faithful Catholic.

The most direct conflict begins with Duterteโs explicit remarks about God and Catholic doctrine. In June 2018, during a public speech, he openly mocked the biblical account of creation and the concept of original sin, declaring:

For Catholics, God is not just a philosophical concept but the Supreme Beingโall-good, all-wise, and worthy of reverence. The Catechism of the Catholic Church clearly teaches that blasphemy is a grave sin: it consists in words or acts that show contempt for God, his name, or his works. To call God โstupidโ and a vulgar insult, and to dismiss central mysteries of the faith as foolishness, is fundamentally incompatible with belief.

Even if some supporters argue this was frustration rather than true apostasy, his own words confirm he rejects the authority and teachings of the Church. A good Catholic cannot simultaneously affirm the faith and embrace someone who openly renounces it.

Duterteโs hostility extended beyond theology to direct, vulgar attacks on the Catholic community. During the 2015 papal visit, he cursed Pope Francis publicly:
โI wanted to call and say: โPope, son of a bitch, go home. Do not visit here anymore.โโ
While he later offered a qualified apology, his tone set the pattern. He repeatedly described the Church as โthe most hypocritical institution,โ accused bishops of immorality, and even suggested critics among the clergy should be killed:
โThese bishops of yoursโkill them. They are useless fools.โ
Catholic teaching calls for respect for religious authority, even when individual leaders may fail. Jesus taught to โgive to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God what belongs to God,โ and to honor legitimate spiritual leadership.
Supporting a leader who routinely uses profanity against the Vicar of Christ and encourages contempt for the Church creates a direct contradiction. One cannot claim to love the faith while supporting someone who actively seeks to undermine and insult it.

Human rights groups estimate that between 12,000 and 30,000 mostly poor suspects were killed without trial, due process, or legal defense.
For Catholics, the Fifth CommandmentโโYou shall not killโโis absolute. The Church teaches that every human life, regardless of sin, poverty, or crime, is sacred and made in Godโs image.
In 2017, the Catholic Bishopsโ Conference of the Philippines issued a strong pastoral letter condemning the killings as a โreign of terror,โ stating: โWe cannot be silent when human life is cheapened and justice is replaced by vengeance.โ
Duterte not only ignored this teaching but mocked it. He argued that human rights advocates care more about criminals than victims, framing violence as a necessary solution.
A good Catholic believes justice must be tempered by mercy, and punishment must respect human dignityโnever summary ex*****on. Supporting a campaign built on deliberate killing of the defenseless directly contradicts the moral law.

Duterteโs public persona is defined by unfiltered vulgarity, threats, and unapologetic dishonesty. He openly boasted: โIt is good to bu****it the bishops. It helps you win. Just curse at them, and you win the war against the Church.โ
Catholicism places truthfulness and self-control among the cardinal virtues. Jesus taught: โLet your โyesโ be โyesโ and your โnoโ be โnoโ; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.โ
Frequent use of profanity, habitual lying, and encouraging deception are not neutral traitsโthey run counter to the call to holiness. While no leader is perfect, to support and defend a leaderโs pattern of dishonesty and moral coarseness is to lower the moral standard that faith requires.

Some supporters argue: โI like his policies, but I donโt agree with his attacks on religion.โ However, Catholic social teaching rejects the idea that faith can be compartmentalized. The Second Vatican Council taught that the Gospel must shape all areas of lifeโincluding politics.
When a leader rejects the very foundation of your moral life, supports actions the Church calls gravely sinful, and actively works to discredit your faith, true support cannot be partial.
To be a โgood Catholicโ means your values are rooted in Christ and His Churchโnot in the words of a leader who calls God stupid and dismisses Christian morality.

Rodrigo Duterte himself removed any ambiguity. He called God โstupid,โ cursed the Pope, declared he was no longer Catholic, and authorized mass killings in violation of fundamental moral law. To claim one can be fully a supporter of his legacy while remaining a sincere, practicing Catholic requires ignoring or justifying these fundamental contradictions.
A good Catholic follows the moral law, respects God and His Church, defends the dignity of every human life, and upholds truth. Supporting someone who openly opposes these principles is ultimately a choice between political loyalty and the faith you profess.
