SineLab 2026 is now calling for participants!

Join a one-day workshop and creative exchange designed for aspiring filmmakers, creatives, students, cultural workers, and cinema enthusiasts ready to learn, create, connect, and grow.

This year’s featured sessions bring real industry experience into the room:

🎨 Creative Direction — Carlos Quimpo

Explore performance, creative direction, and opportunities in the Philippine creative industry while exchanging ideas and building meaningful connections with fellow creatives.

When we seed knowledge, industry experience, and creative confidence, we give new stories a stronger place to grow.

For SineLab 2026, we’re bringing together creative voices who can share not only what they know, but also what they’ve learned from working in the industry.

Joining us are Chai Fonacier, award-winning writer and actress, and Carlos A. Quimpo, creative director and illustrator—bringing their experiences, insights, and perspectives to help inspire the next generation of Aklanon creatives.

Through shared knowledge, real-world experience, and meaningful conversations, we hope to cultivate stronger storytellers and a more vibrant regional film community. 🌱🎥

There was no stable local film industry, no established audience, and no dedicated facility for cinema events. It became clear that having films was only one part of the work. An ecosystem for cinema also had to be built.

CineKali was an important beginning.

Its experiences and challenges helped shape the next chapter of Aklanon Cinema—moving from simply bringing films to Aklan toward creating stronger platforms for Aklanon filmmakers themselves.

Before there was a network, there was a community.
Before there was a community, there was an audience.

CineKali was where that story began.

Before Aklanon stories reached the screen, we first had to learn how to tell them through cinema.

Logline:
During a power outage, two teenagers entertain themselves with frightening stories from Aklanon folklore, until an unexplained knock at the door makes them wonder if something from the darkness has been listening.

Rooted in tales of the Wak-Wak, Amaeanhig, and the familiar fears passed down through generations, Sugilanon sa Dueom turns an ordinary night without electricity into a chilling encounter with Aklanon folklore.

But beyond the horror is an important piece of our filmmaking history.

Created in 2015 as a hands-on film training and team-building exercise before Sa Pagtunod it Adlaw for CineKasimanwa 2015, the short became an early space for young Aklanon creatives to learn filmmaking by actually making a film: developing a story, working with a script, shooting, coordinating, and creating together.

What was once simply an exercise now returns as a reminder of where many creative journeys begin: with curiosity, collaboration, local stories, and the courage to create with what we have.

Aklanon Cinema looks back at Sugilanon sa Dueom not only as a tale from the dark, but as a small yet meaningful chapter in the continuing story of Aklanon filmmaking.

For more than a decade, Aklanon Cinema has been helping local stories find their way to the screen by discovering new voices, developing creative skills, producing original films, and building opportunities for Aklanon filmmakers.

Every story needs somewhere to start.
For many Aklanon creatives, this is where it began.
