“Innovation is not just about creating something new — it is about creating value.”

This became the central theme during Day 2 of the CORE Talent Accelerator: Power Skills Development Camp and Technical Masterclass, particularly in the Design Thinking Session led by Focal Labs Chief Science Officer, Christine Faith Germinal last May 13, 2026.

The session brought together 100+ Information Technology and Computer Science students from the City of Malabon University for an engaging discussion on innovation, design thinking, and building solutions that truly matter. Students were challenged to look beyond technology itself and focus instead on understanding real-world problems, human needs, and the kind of impact their ideas can create for society.

The activity was organized by PhilDev Foundation and supported by Wells Fargo Philippines as part of the CORE Talent Accelerator — a capability-building initiative designed to develop the next generation of tech talent. The program engages students from partner universities and aims to support over 600 learners through structured training, mentorship, and applied innovation activities.

As technology continues to shape the future, sessions like these remind young innovators that the most meaningful solutions are those grounded in empathy, purpose, and real societal value.

Close to 130 second-year students from the College of Technology (CoT) of the Lapu-Lapu City College actively participated during the Design Thinking Session, facilitated this time by Focal Labs Chief Science Officer Christine Faith Germinal, on Day 2 of the CORE Talent Accelerator: Power Skills Development Camp and Technical Masterclass, organized by PhilDev Foundation, supported by Wells Fargo Philippines.

During the session, Christine emphasized that having a basic understanding of the user problem — their pain points — is the most crucial and non-negotiable step before creating a solution. Skipping this step means the startup will never be ready and equipped enough to create a solution that will work and create meaningful impact.

Lastly, she challenged them to create innovations that will drive real world impact rather than just solving inconveniences.

Focal Labs Chief Business Development Officer Jomar Caseres flew to Cebu early this month to lead the Design Thinking workshop for an estimated 100 students at Mandaue City College, Cebu Province.

The whole day session is a continuation of PhilDev Foundation’s CORE Talent Accelerator, a capability-building initiative designed to develop the next generation of tech talent. Supported by Wells Fargo Philippines, the program engages students from their partner universities and aims to support over 600 learners through structured training, mentorship, and applied innovation activities.

The session aims to introduce students to a structured, human-centered approach to identifying problems, generating solutions, and testing ideas.

During the hands-on workshop, Jomar emphasized that innovation starts with empathy, by being customer-obsessed. He highlighted that the best ideas come from solving real-world problems that can only be realized by observing people, understanding their pain points. Lastly, he urged our future innovators from Cebu to fail fast, fail early — prototyping accelerates learning, producing better innovations.

Together with the rest of the team from Focal Labs and PhilDevs, Jomar looks forward to what these students can achieve using the Design Thinking framework in their own projects, future businesses, and innovations.

Focal Labs was given the privilege to contribute to the next generation of Filipino tech talent through a full-day Design Thinking session, organized by the PhilDev Foundation with the support of Wells Fargo Philippines, for the IT/ICT students held recently at PATEROS TECHNOLOGICAL COLLEGE.

Kasaka Agriventures co-founder Diana Chua, also Focal Labs CMO, delivered an immersive session on Design Thinking to 90+ student participants. The workshop focused on equipping the young learners and future innovators with a practical, human-centered framework for solving real-world and technology-driven challenges.

The students learned how to:
✅ Understand and articulate the core stages of the Design Thinking process
✅ Apply structured problem-solving methods to complex tech challenges
✅ Strengthen empathy and user-centered innovation skills
✅ Build confidence in collaborative ideation and rapid prototyping

To assist students for their group presentations, Focal Labs CEO Francis Bernardo provided additional support and insights during the breakout sessions.

The Design Thinking immersion emphasized that innovation is not just about building technology — it is about solving the right problems in the right way.

Focal Labs CEO Francis Bernardo, together with Chief Science Officer, Christine Faith Germinal, led one of the Talk Sessions at the recently concluded Add Venture Forum organized by Leave a Nest Group at the Yuchengco Hall, De La Salle University.

Focal Labs was one of the Leave a Nest Philippines partner organizations during the forum that aimed at connecting university students and graduates with companies and startups in an innovative, intimate career-fair setting.

Francis and Christine inspired students by sharing their experience as innovators and startup founders. They encouraged students to learn beyond the classroom setting, making real-world impact through innovations that matter.

After the talk, the students were able to get a free taste of Calzing, a product of CIRPRO Innovations, a Focal Lab startup partner.
