Last June 24, the Film Academy of the Philippines held the first Visayas Guild Summit, bringing together filmmakers and audiovisual workers from every region of Visayas.

For many delegates, it was the first time they had the opportunity to gather as Visayan filmmakers.

Here are some takeaways from delegates.

Philippine animation is on an international festival run! "58th," the animated documentary on the 2009 Maguindanao Massacre directed by Carl Joseph Papa, won the Facing the Edge award in the Festival Category at the Doc Edge Festival 2026 in New Zealand. Producer Nessa Valdellon, GMA Pictures Executive Vice President, received the honor on behalf of the film.

The film centers on Reynaldo "Bebot" Momay, recognized as the massacre's 58th victim, whose body has never been recovered. It follows the 2025 win of "Food Delivery: Fresh from the West Philippine Sea," which took the Tides of Change award at Doc Edge, marking a second consecutive year a Filipino documentary has been honored at the festival.

As we bid Pride Month farewell, we reaffirm our commitment to the fight for equality, respect, dignity, and… well, pride!

—Paolo Villaluna, Director-General of the Film Academy of the Philippines

Congratulations to Lav Diaz on Magellan entering the Criterion Collection!

One of cinema's most prestigious honors, the Criterion Collection is home to the greatest films ever made, and Magellan now stands among them. A bold, haunting reimagining of Ferdinand Magellan's fateful voyage to the Philippines, the film is a stark vision of the brutality of European conquest and an elegy for a lost precolonial past, starring Gael García Bernal.

Magellan was among the films supported by the Film Academy of the Philippines in last year's Oscars bid, and seeing it now enshrined in the Criterion Collection is a proud moment for Philippine cinema. 🇵🇭

The Film Academy of the Philippines supports the Filipino Screenwriters Guild in its call for proper on-screen credit for its members.

Credit is a basic right of authorship. To withhold it denies the writer both recognition and compensation.

This right is protected by law. In the Philippines, authors’ moral rights include the right to attribution, which should be reflected in contract language and honored in the final work.

The Film Academy stands with every film and audiovisual worker whose work deserves to be named and paid for.

FSG has reached out to the Academy to properly address this specific concern, and we continue to encourage all guilds and workers who experience cases of uncredited or uncompensated work to report concerns and file grievances through professional channels.

Visit our website at grievances.filmacademy.gov.ph, or email us at [email protected] and [email protected].

Our legal team is ready to respond, assist, and mediate all film and audiovisual industry concerns.
