As we bid goodbye to National Heritage Month, hereโs a fascinating piece of Surigao history waiting to be rediscovered right in the heart of the city.
At Borromeo corner San Nicolas Street stands the El Honor Al Trabajo Monument โ a familiar landmark with a story many may not know.
Built in 1893, the monument honors Don Carlos Villalba y Riquelme, a former Civil and Military Governor of Surigao during the Spanish period, recognized for his dedication to public service.
Hereโs an interesting trivia: beyond being a historic monument, it also serves as his final resting place, making it one of Surigao Cityโs unique and meaningful heritage sites.
Born in Spain in 1854, Don Carlos arrived in Surigao in 1889 with his family and later served the district during a time when travel and communication were far more challenging. He passed away in 1893 while still in service, and the monument was later erected in his honor.
Today, El Honor Al Trabajo Monument stands as a quiet reminder of Surigaoโs history, public service, and the stories that continue to shape the city.
