U.S. SANCTIONS ICC OFFICIALS AS RUBIO DEFENDS WASHINGTON’S POSITION

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the United States has opposed efforts by the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate, arrest, detain, or prosecute officials from governments that have not consented to ICC jurisdiction.

The remarks came as Washington announced sanctions against senior ICC officials, arguing that the court has exceeded its authority. The ICC, meanwhile, maintains that it can exercise jurisdiction in certain circumstances under the Rome Statute. CENTRAL VISAYAS CRIME CRACKDOWN: 469 ARRESTED BY PRO7

The Police Regional Office 7 (PRO7) arrested a total of 469 individualsbduring a three-day simultaneous anti-criminality operation conducted across Central Visayas from August 14 to 17, 2026. The operations focused on illegal drugs, loose fi****ms, illegal gambling, and the apprehension of wanted persons.

Authorities reported the arrest of 186 individuals in anti-drug operations, with around 600 grams of suspected shabu seized, while 24 individuals were arrested and 63 fi****ms confiscated in the campaign against loose fi****ms. Anti-illegal gambling operations also led to 180 arrests, while police apprehended 98 wanted persons, including 19 listed as most wanted. PRO7 said the operations are part of its continuing efforts to strengthen public safety and enforce the law across Central Visayas.

FLOOD CONTROL VS. UNCONTROLLED FLOOD: ₱1.939 TRILLION SPENT, YET FLOODING PERSISTS

Senator Panfilo “Ping” Lacson has questioned the effectiveness of the government’s flood control spending after noting that ₱1.939 trillionbwas allocated to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) flood control management program from 2011 to 2025, covering three presidential administrations.

According to figures cited by Lacson, annual flood management funding increased significantly over the years, reaching more than ₱100 billion annually beginning in 2018. By 2025, the reported allocation had reached ₱372.814 billion.

Lacson said the total spending was equivalent to roughly ₱350 million per day, yet flooding remains a serious problem in many parts of the country, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall and the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat).

The senator’s remarks have renewed questions about the effectiveness, implementation, monitoring, and accountability of flood control projects. The figures, however, represent Lacson’s cited government spending data and his assessment of the continuing flooding problem; they do not by themselves establish that the entire amount was misused.

As heavy rains continue to cause flooding in several areas, the issue has once again placed flood control infrastructure and public spending under scrutiny.

The question being raised: If trillions have already been spent, why does flooding remain uncontrolled?

BREAKING: MAGNITUDE 7.7 EARTHQUAKE STRIKES EASTERN INDONESIA🇮🇩

A powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off the coast of Flores, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, on Saturday, August 15, causing significant damage and triggering a temporary tsunami warning.

Indonesia’s BMKG reported the earthquake at approximately 4:58 a.m. local time, with the epicenter located northeast of Mbay, Nagekeo, at a depth of about 15 kilometers The tsunami warning was later lifted after monitoring showed that the major tsunami threat had ended.

Reports from Indonesian authorities said at least 47 people had died, with others injured, while thousands of residents were evacuated from affected communities. Landslides, damaged roads, power interruptions and communication problems have complicated rescue and relief operations.

BMKG also reported hundreds of aftershocks following the main earthquake, including several strong tremors. Authorities continue to assess the damage and assist affected communities.

A video circulating online on August 14 showed former lawmaker Mike Defensor having a tense exchange with Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) personnel while he was in detention.

Reports said the incident occurred as Defensor was reportedly attempting to speak with members of the media. In the video, Defensor appeared to express his frustration over the situation.

The circumstances surrounding the incident remain subject to clarification from the parties involved. This report is based on available video and media reports, and no conclusion is being made regarding the actions of either side.

Defensor remains in detention as he faces charges before the Sandiganbayan. His bail hearing is scheduled to begin on September 3, 2026.
