It's one of the surefire ways to make your logo or brand look dated. It's not necessarily bad if you're aiming to have a retro or 90's era look, but if not, it poses a problem.
Effects and using design trends help give your logo design that extra impact but the downside is in a few years, you'll need to update it or it will look old and out of touch. If you want to have your design still be useable even in a couple of decades, keep it simple but distinct and memorable.
