Isipin natin ang ganito. Mahirap turuan ang inyong anak. Umaabot hanggang 10 ng gabi pero nakakalimutan niya ang inyong inaral. Ilang beses man niyang titigan o sabihin sa sarili, wala talaga. Pero pagdating sa laro, henyo sa pag-pick up. Habulan, patintero, o tumbang preso, tila di mauubusan ng lakas hanggang magdamag. Kung maari lang gano'n din siya sa Math.

Sino bang nagsabing hindi? Maari yan! Gamit ang buong katawan, mas madali at mas masaya kumpara sa nakaupo lang. Maliit man ang hakbang, pasulong naman sa matutunan.

"Ang magkapatid na Juan at Maria ay mahilig sa mansanas. Kung bumili sila ng 8 na mansanas at sumatutal nito ay 56 pesos, magkano ang bawat isa?"

Ang g**o ay nagsagot at biglang nagtaas ng kamay ang inyong anak.

"Sir, pwede po bang i-drawing ko?"
"Panong drawing?" Kumulot ang noo ng g**o.
"Magdo-drawing po ako ng kahon na kasya 8 na mansanas hanggang sa magkaroon ako ng 48. Tapos kung ilang kahon ang drinawing ko, 'yun 'yung sagot."

Math anxiety often stems from a fear of exposure, timed drills, and the cultural myth that math ability is an innate trait. When students feel threatened, their brains trigger a stress response that blocks information from reaching the prefrontal cortex—where high-level problem-solving occurs (Willis, 2010).

To build psychological safety and foster long-term confidence, educators can implement four key strategies from Dr. Judy Willis's Learning to Love Math (Chapter 1):

De-emphasize Pure Memorization: Shift away from high-stakes timed drills and focus on conceptual depth, pattern recognition, and flexible reasoning (Willis, 2010, pp. 11–13).

Connect Math to Personal Interests: Frame concepts around authentic real-world contexts and individual student passions to trigger dopamine release and boost retention (Willis, 2010, pp. 14–16).

Engage Families as Partners: Collaborate with parents early to address inherited math negativity at home and reframe math as a positive, shared learning experience (Willis, 2010, pp. 18–19).

Reframe Mistakes as Learning Tools: Normalize errors as natural steps in the learning process to eliminate "mistake anxiety" and encourage academic risk-taking (Willis, 2010, pp. 20–22).

May mga batang hindi ayaw matuto—natatakot lang silang magkamali.

Bilang magulang o g**o, minsan ang simpleng ngiti, tango, thumbs-up, o “Okay lang, try natin ulit” ay sapat para maramdaman nilang ligtas silang sumubok.

Unti-unti, natututuhan nila:

“Okay lang magkamali.”
“Pwede akong humingi ng tulong.”
“Kaya kong subukan ulit.”

At baka ito rin ang healing na gusto nating ipasa sa susunod na henerasyon—ang pagkakataong matuto nang walang hiya o takot sa pagkakamali.
