Dubai is constructing the world’s largest solar-powered water desalination plant, set to supply clean drinking water to up to two million people daily—using only energy from the sun. Named the Hassyan desalination plant, the project is a collaboration between Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, ACWA Power, and Veolia.
Once operational, it will produce 818,000 cubic meters of fresh water per day using advanced reverse osmosis and energy-saving systems that cut power use by up to 35% compared to older technologies. Entirely powered by solar energy, the plant will operate with zero fossil fuel emissions—making it a groundbreaking solution to water scarcity in arid regions like the Middle East.
Located about 55 km southwest of Dubai Creek, the facility is expected to be completed by 2027. With a €848 million budget, it plays a key role in Dubai’s push toward carbon neutrality and sustainable infrastructure for its growing population.
