How To Protect Your Amazon Seller Account From Being Hacked


Many people have seen recent articles about the hacking of Amazon selling accounts, both Professional and Individual. SellerEngine has a few recommendations on what you can do to protect yourself from events like this.

Widely publicized, the recent hacking of Amazon seller accounts has created a furor across the country. The fact that hackers gained access to login information from personal accounts that had been hacked in the past has alarmed all of us. It has also made us doubt Amazonโ€™s ability to safeguard our personal and business information.

Our office was abuzz with sellersโ€™ questions this week, and itโ€™s become clear to us that we need to offer some reassurance to our readers. So, we put together this FAQ section to answer some of your most pressing questions:

Do the hackers have my login data?
Luckily, things arenโ€™t as bleak as they seem. We know the โ€˜hackersโ€™ bought a list of previously hacked personal accounts from the โ€˜dark webโ€™. They then checked to see if the login details they were given matched any Amazon usersโ€™ login credentials.

You have no reason to believe your Amazon seller account has been hijacked if you havenโ€™t noticed any suspicious activity and you have a unique password. But, for added peace of mind, you could change your password at any time.

Does this mean Amazonโ€™s servers are vulnerable?
The culprits didnโ€™t hack Amazonโ€™s servers. It just so happened that their victims, the Amazon sellers, used the same password across multiple websites. The โ€˜hackersโ€™ tried all the credentials they had on the Amazon.com website, and a few matched genuine Amazon accounts. They simply got lucky. This isnโ€™t โ€˜hackingโ€™, but rather โ€˜hijackingโ€™.

How does this affect Amazon account holders?
This kind of thing happens every day to companies of all sizes from the four corners of the world. However, it doesnโ€™t make it any easier on the victims, both sellers and buyers. On the one hand, you have genuine and honest sellers who find themselves locked out of their seller accounts โ€“ possibly their only source of income. On the other, you have buyers who never receive their orders and become very frustrated with the lack of communication.

Whatโ€™s in it for the โ€˜hackersโ€™?
The hijackers list non-existing merchandise and sell it to unsuspecting customers, hoping to cash in before Amazon catches on. But now the jokeโ€™s on them because Amazon claims it will make it impossible for hackers to be imbursed when they confirm shipment.

Who are they targeting?
To keep under the radar, the hackers tend to target dormant seller accounts without performance notification warning messages sent by Amazonโ€™s Sell... More, but they can just as easily attack an established seller with a massive turnover. Unfortunately, even if the hijacked account is recovered and the customers are reimbursed, this doesnโ€™t guarantee that the sellerโ€™s reputation wonโ€™t suffer.

What happens if I use my seller account credentials in an app?
We canโ€™t speak for other software developers, but hereโ€™s how things stand for our users. Amazon does not allow us to see your personal information or your credentials. Your Amazon account credentials are dealt with entirely on Amazonโ€™s end, and we never see your password.

What happens if I use two-factor authentication in an app?
Two-factor authentication is likewise something thatโ€™s just on Amazonโ€™s side, and neither Sellery nor any other of our software tools would know the difference. We do recommend you have this in place on your Amazon account for increased security.

Do you store any sensitive Amazon seller information?
The only information we get after you log in with an Amazon account is a token, which can only be used to get your email address and name. And we donโ€™t even store it, for that matter. We donโ€™t store any sensitive information. This applies to both mobile and desktop SellerEngine apps.

How can I protect my account from hackers?
Change your passwords regularly, donโ€™t use the same password on more than one website, and opt for 2-factor authentication on Amazon, if you can. If you notice any suspicious activity on your account, then contact Amazon immediately.

7 Secrets to Amazon Success

If youโ€™re an online retailer, youโ€™re already familiar with the selling power of Amazon. With more than 304 million active user accounts and 43% of all online retail sales in the US going through the marketplace, this e-commerce giantโ€™s influential position continues to expand.

But for brands and retailers that want to succeed on this powerful marketplace, simply listing your products on the site is not nearly enough. It pays to be proactive and up-to-date with Amazonโ€™s ever-evolving trends and requirements.

With so many customers flocking to the site worldwide, Amazon is also a competitive field for retailers. Therefore, you need to make sure your products and brand stay one step ahead of competitorsโ€™. In this eBook, weโ€™ll share some of the most important strategies that retailers should employ to succeed on Amazon.

1. Optimise Your Search Terms and Listings

When writing your product listings, put yourself in the minds of the consumers. What are they looking for, and how are they going to search for it? More than half (55%) of online shoppers start their product searches on Amazon โ€” almost double the 28% who start with Google. Itโ€™s the primary method used by consumers to locate items, so the more you match your listings to their search preferences, the greater your chances of success.

Keep in mind, however, that optimising content for other search engines is much different than optimising product listings for Amazon search. Sellers are allowed five search terms for each product, and it takes time and effort to identify the ideal mix of keyword combinations. Several best practices can help:

Research Start by doing a search for a similar product to see what listings come up high in the rankings and find words you may not be using already.
Use Single Words Instead of Phrases Longer phrases mean that consumers would have to search for that exact phrase to find your product.
Don't Repeat Words From Your Product Title Amazon already factors those into search results.
Only Use Terms that Describe Your Specific Product Amazon doesnโ€™t permit third-party brands or trademarks as search terms.
Use Hidden Keywords, Where Appropriate The optional hidden key field is an opportunity to use synonyms, acronyms, abbreviations and other alternatives that consumers may be using to find your products.
2. Participate in Prime

Amazon Prime members are big spenders, with an estimated 80 million consumers spending nearly double what non-members do as they navigate Prime privileges like free one-day shipping, photo storage and streaming video and music

Through Prime, Amazon has created a consumer relationship where it pays to buy more: In an effort to get more value from the ยฃ79 annual fee, members find themselves ordering more often and in higher quantities. While only 22% of non-Prime customers shop on Amazon more than once a month, 73% of Prime members make two to three purchases every 30 days. And the longer they stay with the program, the more they spend: 41% of those in their first year of Prime spend over $800 a year, while 68% of those who have held onto their memberships for more than four years spend at the same level.

Two options offer access to the golden shelves of Amazon Prime: Fulfilment by Amazon (FBA) and Seller Fulfiled Prime.

At last count, more than 1 billion items were being shipped via Fulfilment by Amazon (FBA). This service is for retailers looking to expand sales without having to worry about the inevitable increase in packaging and shipping. It allows you to store your products in shipping centres until theyโ€™re purchased, when Amazon packages and delivers them directly to consumers for you.

Along with handling your packaging and deliveries, FBA also manages your customer support and returns and keeps your inventory secure and insured against any possible losses or damages. Perhaps the biggest selling point, however, is that because you donโ€™t have to worry about limited storage space, you can sell far higher quantities of your products when the demand is there.

If you prefer to manage your inventory, thereโ€™s Seller Fulfiled Prime. You can continue to ship through your own warehouse or fulfilment network and still have full access to Amazonโ€™s network of lucrative Prime members.

4. Strive for the Buy Box

You probably know how important the Buy Box is on Amazon. And with only one Buy Box available per item, youโ€™ll find yourself competing with a number of other retailers all trying to win it. The Buy Box is located on a productโ€™s page - where a consumer starts the purchase process - and is highly visible.

To win the Buy Box, you must meet Amazonโ€™s criteria in a number of areas. Although Amazon closely protects the exact formula for calculating the Buy Box, it takes into consideration:

A competitive price
A positive customer feedback metric
Fast and efficient delivery
Volume of inventory
Low refund and return rates
Though it generally takes some time for a new seller to build up a sales history that will win them the Buy Box, focusing on these aspects is good for business regardless of the marketplace. Theyโ€™ll not only help to increase your sales but will also contribute to your customersโ€™ overall satisfaction.

5. Go Global

Around the world, people are turning to Amazon to meet all kinds of shopping needs. With marketplaces in the US, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Canada, Japan, China and more - and with worldwide retail e-commerce sales projected to top $4 trillion by 2020 - selling internationally could significantly increase your consumer base and sales.

To start, thereโ€™s Amazon Global Selling. The program opens up your Amazon product listings to international consumers who are already shopping on Amazon.com and is a great way to โ€œtest the watersโ€ of cross-border trade. Youโ€™ll get great insight into which regions provide the most demand and can see which countries are predominantly buying your products - then use that knowledge to determine if expanding to a marketplace there will be cost effective. And since youโ€™re selling through Amazon, you wonโ€™t need to translate or localise your listings for other regions.

Signing up for the Amazon Pan-European FBA program is also a great idea if youโ€™re considering selling internationally. This program allows your products to be purchased from amazon.co.uk by consumers across Europe for fulfilment through Amazonโ€™s many centres in Europe. However, you still need to retain a sufficient rate of return.

Return Dissatisfaction Rate (RDR), which measures customer satisfaction with how returns are processed.
Late Shipment Rate, which measures the percentage of seller-fulfiled orders confirmed after the expected ship date.
Remember, your reputation on Amazon is extremely important. Customers listen to other customers, and that affects your bottom line. Keep a close eye on your metrics and ensure that youโ€™re dealing with requests quickly and efficiently.

OA requires inventory investment.

DS doesn't require any inventory investment beforehand.

In OA, seller owns inventory.

In DS, seller doesn't own inventory.

In OA, seller controls order fulfillment so he's responsible for late shipping, refunds etc

In DS, supplier is responsible for order fulfillment instead of seller.

OA is difficult to scale as it's specified to a single product usually.

DS business is easier to scale as you just need a team who constantly monitor the market, list products and check their availability from suppliers.
6๏ธโƒฃ Adaptability:

OA is difficult to adapt as you can't switch to other product unless you don't get rid of previous inventory.

DS is easier to adapt to new realities. If you see the product's demand is declining, you can easily switch to another as you don't own the inventory.
