Strategic Textile Collaboration at GIA Marketing Office
Mr Sibtain Merchant continued his B2B meetings the first day of the trip to Karachi

February 11, 2024: A key business meeting at GIA Marketing Office, Karachi, explored textile sector opportunities between Pakistan and East Africa. Attendees included Mr. Ayaz Thaver (CEO, GIA Export Marketing Services), Mr. Sibtain Merchant (Investor & Trader, East Africa), and Mr. Ali Vazir (Secretary General, Diplomatic Business Club & Regional Manager, TBC Incorporation Africa).
Mr. Thaver outlined GIA Marketing’s expertise in textile exports, while Mr. Merchant highlighted East Africa’s upcoming ban on used clothing imports by 2026, emphasizing the need for local garment manufacturing. Mr. Vazir stressed the importance of fostering Pakistan-Africa business ties.
The meeting resulted in a proposal for setting up garment manufacturing units in Uganda and Kenya, leveraging Pakistan’s high-quality textile supply. Initial investments would include sewing, embroidery, and textile printing machines, supporting export processing zones (EPZs) in East Africa. This initiative would qualify garments for ‘Made in EAC’ tax incentives and duty waivers in the U.S. market.
Mr. Thaver committed to providing textile and machinery catalogs and training for East African workers, while Mr. Merchant will finalize product requirements. A follow-up meeting is scheduled for March 2025 to advance this collaboration, strengthening economic ties between Pakistan and East Africa.
