You can't achieve your goals...
Yes, you canโt.
Until they are "SMART."
Almost everyone has heard about setting SMART goals at some point in their career. But what does SMART really mean?
Is it Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound? Yes, that's the acronym we all know.
But most people don't understand the deeper meaning behind these terms.
It has been my 2 years in digital marketing as an SEO specialist, I've seen many agency owners talk about SMART goals, but they rarely seem to truly decode what being 'SMART' actually involves.
Well, I will try to decode it and I would love the insights of experts.
1- Being Specific isnโt just "I want this." Itโs also about asking yourself, "Why do I want this?" "Whatโs the purpose?" "What are the requirements?" and "What are the benefits?" The more you dive into these questions, the clearer and more Specific your goal becomes. For example, "I want to grow my brand" is blurry. But "I want to increase my website traffic to 10,000 visitors" is a specific goal.
2- Measurable means having evidence to track progress. Wether your goal is to increase website visitors, sales or revenue. Rely on metrics, they let you know if your goal is on track or if itโs been achieved.
3- Set a realistic and Attainable goal. Because at the end of the day, your goal is to achieve your goal. Set some challenges which identify your goal's progress.
4- Your goal should be Relevent. Ask yourself, "Does this goal fit my companyโs needs and priorities?" If it doesnโt connect with your overall vision, itโs time to rethink it.
5- A goal which is not Time-bound is not a goal, It's a dream. And dreams end up once you wake up.
What are your steps in setting SMART goals? Iโd love to hear your experiences and insights!
