Most internet traffic isn't even real.

A study in 2012 discovered that most of the traffic on the internet wasn't actually people, but was quite often made up of bots, hackers and malicious programs.

More than half of web traffic comes from automated programs—many of them malicious.Most website visitors aren’t humans, but are instead bots—or, programs built to do automated tasks. They are the worker bees of the internet, and also the henchmen.

51 per cent of all internet traffic is said to be "non-human" in that regard. This traffic is often attempting to steal data, hijack sites, carry out denial-of-service attacks and more.

The average computer user blinks just seven times a minute.

Research suggests that the average computer user blinks significantly less than normal while at their screen.

A person normally blinks around 20 times per minute. This is sufficient for the eyes to be replenished with tears, and also gets rid of unwanted debris. This is reduced by as much as 7.5 blinks per minute when you are concentrating on your computer screen – less than half the average.

Your eyes are relatively at rest and relaxed when you look in the distance, but the muscles in your eyes have to work harder to keep a near focus while doing near work.

It is said that we blink seven times per minute instead of the usual 20. Hence why your eyes dry out more while working in front of a monitor.

It’s no surprise this tech powerhouse needs a lot of power!

That accounts for about 0.013% of the entire world’s energy use. Google’s many data centers around the world burn through 260 million watts—one quarter of the output of a nuclear power plant.The company had been cagey about revealing energy usage stats in the past, probably because it didn’t want to reveal to competitors how quickly its data centers were growing. It’s no longer a secret that Google needs a crazy amount of data centers to keep things running smoothly.

And while not all of their energy is from wind and solar, they purchase carbon offsets which leaves them with no carbon footprint!

An artificial intelligence was created (with 87% accuracy) in determining disease outbreaks, such as dengue fever.

Artificial intelligence (AI) represents a valuable tool that could be widely used to inform clinical and public health decision-making to effectively manage the impacts of a pandemic. The objective of this scoping review was to identify the key use cases for involving AI for pandemic preparedness and response from the peer-reviewed, preprint, and grey literature.

There are hopes to use this tech to predict outbreaks for more serious diseases like Ebola and Zika.

CAPTCHA is a long acronym.

It stands for “Completely Automatic Public Turning Test to Tell Computers and Humans Apart”.

CAPTCHAs provide challenges that are difficult for computers to perform but relatively easy for humans. For example, identifying stretched letters or numbers, or clicking in a specific area.

This CAPTCHA type relies on a human’s ability to generalize and recognize novel patterns based on variable past experience. In contrast, bots can often only follow set patterns or input randomized characters. This limitation makes it unlikely that bots will correctly guess the right combination.

Even though some artificial intelligence can get through CAPTCHA, it’s still useful in blocking some bots.

The QWERTY keyboard was originally designed to slow you down.

When typewriters were introduced, typing too fast would jam the keys.

Using a QWERTY keyboard spaced out commonly used characters to slow typists down and prevent jamming.

In their first experiment, the researchers analyzed 1,000-word indexes from English, Spanish and Dutch, comparing their perceived positivity with their location on the QWERTY keyboard.

The effect was slight but significant: Right-sided words scored more positively than left-sided words.

If you wanted to learn a more efficient keyboard, Dvorak is made for speed.

While we’re on the subject of keyboards and typing, did you know that on a typical work day, a typists’ fingers will “travel” about 12.6 miles.

NASA’s internet speed is 91 GB per second.

The average household internet speeds are roughly 25 MB per second.

That’s usually fast enough to watch Netflix with no buffer time. It got me wondering how they managed to reach those kinds of speed nearly eight years ago.

NASA has field centers across the globe, and relaying time-sensitive information across different time zones and locations across the world will require high speeds and security.

And let’s face the fact, if there’s any tech company that would actually make good use of them internet speeds, it’s NASA.

In 1956, the first computer had something similar to a hard drive.

At the time, it was a huge leap in storage capabilities, but the cabinet that contained the hard drive weighed over 2,200 pounds and could hold 5 MBs of data.

The first Apple logo isn’t what you would think.

Everyone recognizes the Apple logo today, which is unsurprisingly an apple.
Ronald Wayne, Apple Computer Co co-founder, designed the original Apple logo when started the company.

In the 1970s, Apple’s logo featured Isaac Newton sitting under an apple tree. Newton discovered gravity when an apple fell on his head, hence the symbolism of the logo.

A quote from William Wordsworth lined the frame of the Apple logo. Apple has since adopted its more common “bitten-apple” based logo.

Nonetheless, few people could identify the company’s original logo if given a multiple choice quiz. The modern, simplified logo for the company right now exemplifies everything Apple is about today.
