In 1238, Muhammad I Ibn al-Ahmar, the founder of the Nasrid Dynasty, began the construction of the Alhambra in Granada, Spain. Initially, it was built as a fortified palace (citadel) to provide protection and establish a royal residence. The early structure was simple, focused mainly on defense, with strong walls and watchtowers. It marked the beginning of one of the most important Islamic architectural projects in Spain.
