In my opinion Performance Max should:

1. Expand your coverage across all eligible networks.
2. Result in bottom-line incremental conversion volume.

Below you will find a breakdown of 24 Performance Max Lead Gen campaigns.

If you see they're extremely BoFu-biased, you should question their added value.

Especially if you don't see any new (and converting) search categories in your insights tab. Performance Max is probably cannibalizing your Search campaigns heavily.

In my opinion, it's a MUCH better idea to ditch Performance Max in these specific cases.

Work on your Search campaigns instead and increase your exposure in this dedicated campaign type. There are multiple tactics to do so.

This results in:

1. Better insights (e.g. complete search term report and auction-level insights).
2. Better control (e.g. Max CPC caps through Portfolio Bid Strategies).
